Nadia knocks, and I barely have time to open the door before she holds up a bottle of wine.
“Please tell me you haven't picked an outfit yet.”
“Hello to you, too.” I give her a quick hug. “And as for your question, I've been trying, but I really need a second opinion.”
She follows me into the bedroom and stops when she sees the dresses spread across my bed.
“Okay,” she says. “Talk me through the thought process here, because I'm seeing one dress that says, ‘I'm serious about this,’ one that says, ‘I forgot the date was tonight, and this is the first thing I threw on,’ and one that says, ‘I'm looking for some bedroom action.’ I need to know which one we're going with.”
“Well, if you can glean all that from just a dress, obviously the first one.”
“Okay, if I can't convince you to go for the third option, then it's definitely this one.” She picks up the green dress. It's the one I keep circling back to. She holds it against me in the mirror.
“It's very you.” She tilts her head. “Though I notice it's suspiciously similar to the color of someone's eyes, so…”
Now that she mentions it, I realize she's right. Huh.
Maybe I shouldn't pick the green one.
No! I will not let Wyatt ruin my perfect dress choice.
I try to sound nonchalant. “It's not.”
“I didn't say a name.”
“You didn't have to.”
Nadia settles on the edge of my bed while I do my makeup, watching me through the mirror. “You've done that eye three times now.”
“Because I keep messing it up.”
“Looked fine to me the first time.”
I lean closer to the mirror and try to fix the eyeliner without making it worse.
“So,” she says, “are we excited about Adam?”
“Yeah. I think so.”
“You think so?”
“I am excited. I'm just nervous.”
“Okay.” She takes a sip of her wine. “What do we know about him again?”
“He's nice. He's got a good job. Dad really likes him.”
“Your dad likes him. Well, that's promising.”
I shoot her a look in the mirror.
“What? I'm sure he's lovely.” She pauses. “You haven't mentioned his eyes once, though.”
“Oh my God, Nadia. Can you stop with the Wyatt thing already?”
She laughs. “Sure. Let's talk about Adam.” She crosses her legs. “Have you been texting him?”
