I set my phone on the little table beside the door and open it only a few inches, keeping the security chain in place.

"Can I help you?"

"Miss Collins?"

"Who's asking?"

"Mr. Moretti sent me."

Of course he did.

Apparently, the universe has decided I can't go on one normal date without my married mobster making an appearance.

"Tell Mr. Moretti I'm not interested."

"He needs to speak with you."

"Then he can call my lawyer. Or my cats. They're about equally interested in hearing from him."

I start closing the door, but the man's hand shoots out and catches the edge.

"Miss Collins, don't make this difficult."

My blood turns cold.

"Get your hand off my door."

He pushes hard. The security chain catches, and for one second I think it'll hold. Then the mounting tears loose from the frame, and the door slams inward.

I stumble backward as the man forces his way inside.

"What the hell are you doing?"

He grabs my arm. I scream and twist away, knocking into the little table beside the door. My purse falls, spilling its contents across the floor, while Murder Mittens bolts beneath the couch and Salem disappears down the hallway.

"Let go of me!"

I swing my free hand, catching the bastard across the face with my nails. He curses, tightening his grip, and I kick him hard enough in the shin that he actually stumbles.

"Fucking bitch!"

"Get out of my apartment!"

I wrench free long enough to grab my phone from the table, but he catches me before I can unlock it. The phone hits the floor and slides beneath the couch.

I scream again, praying Mrs. Patterson will hear me. The man clamps a hand over my mouth, and I bite him hard enough to taste blood.

He jerks away with a furious curse, then catches both my arms and forces them behind my back. Pain shoots through my shoulders as I struggle, digging my heels into the floor while he drags me toward the doorway.

"Help!" I scream. "Somebody help me!"

He twists my arm, and I cry out.

"Keep screaming, and those fucking cats are going to have a very bad night."

I freeze.
