“What?” I ask, blushing.

“Nothing.”

“Liar.”

He grins. “This is just going a lot smoother than I expected. That’s all.”

I slide my hand along his jaw, stubble scratching beneath my fingers. My chest aches as I consider how he felt walking up the stairs with the ring in his pocket. I hate that I probably made him feel nervous about it.

“You’re pretty great, Miller.”

“Well, you’re pretty, and you’re great.”

I laugh, climbing onto his lap. One knee on either side of his thighs, I brace myself against his chest. My ring catches my attention, and I lift my hand, wiggling my fingers and watching it catch the light.

“Does it fit okay?” Finn asks.

“Like a charm.” A smile slips across my face. “It feels so …” I’m not sure what to say or how to verbalize the feeling in my body. The warmth, the peace, the happiness.

“So what?” he asks, lacing his hands together at the small of my back.

I shrug, setting my hand back on his chest. “It just feels different from what I imagined, that’s all.”

“Good or bad different?”

“Definitely not this good.” I smile as I kiss him. “It’s … I’m very happy right now.”

He pulls me to his chest, pressing a kiss against my shoulder. Even if he used words to explain how he feels, it wouldn’t be as clear as this. That’s not surprising, though. Our bodies have never had a problem communicating.

Heat unfurls inside me as I lean closer to him, wanting more of everything. Of his touch, his kisses, his body. But mostly, I want more of the way he makes me feel when I’m all wrapped up in his arms.

I want him to know that I want more than an orgasm.

I want him to know what he means to me.

“Have I ever told you that you make me happy?” I ask.

He stills.

“You’re probably expecting a joke now,” I say, listening to his heartbeat quicken. “Probably something insinuating that I have a way that you could multiply my happiness.”

He chuckles but doesn’t say anything. I grin against him.

“Which is true,” I say, just so he doesn’t get it twisted. Serious or not, I always want his cock. “But besides sex, you do make me happy, Finn. And I’m not sure I’ve ever told you that.”

He sighs, holding me tighter. “That’s really good to hear.”

“I imagined you coming upstairs tonight with this ring and worrying about how I might react, and I hate that. You go out of your way to make sure that I know how you feel all the time. It’s only fair that I do the same.”

“I love hearing that. More than you know.” He pulls back, pushing my hair away from my face. “But you don’t owe me anything just because there’s a ring on your finger, Pop. You know that, right?”

I nod, nibbling my bottom lip. How does he do that? How does he take the things I fear the most and make them almost obsolete? I’ve given him many things he could weaponize against me, and he never has. Not once. If anything, he’s picked them apart and used them to make me stronger.

He’s also challenged my internal narration without even knowing it.

He swallows, searching my eyes. “I want you to share things with me because you want to, not because you think it’s fair.”

“I know. I want to. That’s why I’m telling you.”
