I sigh, frowning as he glances at me.

Yeah, I think it’s time we had a talk.

CHAPTER

THREE

Poppy

Thunder rumbles around us, shaking the car. The rain picks up again with large droplets of water smashing against the vehicle. Finn turns the wipers on full speed and messes with the thermostat again.

“Let’s have a chat,” I say, stretching my head from side to side.

“What about?”

“Oh, nothing. Mostly about you.”

“Me?” He grins. “What about me?”

“Honestly? You’re a little too good at this friends-with-benefits thing, and it’s starting to become a problem.”

He snorts, amused by my reply. “My apologies.”

“I mean it.” I sink into the warm leather and wrap my arms around my middle. “I was just thinking about how we’ve gotten a little off track lately.”

“Here we go,” he says, rolling his eyes. “You’re about to Poppy me, aren’t you?”

I roll my eyes, too.

“Listen,” I say. “I’m just not sure that friends with benefits are supposed to offer financial support to their fuck buddy’s charity or go out of their way to pick them up from the airport close to midnight.” With snacks.

“And you’re mad about that?”

“No, I’m not mad. I mean, how could I be mad when you’re doting on me? That’s literally the definition of an ego boost.” I laugh. “But it is getting a little too … easy. Too routine. Too this is just how we are. And I think we need to put us back into our lane, and it would help if you’d stop being so boyfriend-y.”

I sit up and smile. That was a damn good explanation.

Finn, however, doesn’t seem to agree. His brows pull together as he grips the steering wheel. His forearms flex, and I have to rip my gaze away from them and refocus.

“My behavior hasn’t changed, Pop.”

“Then the way I internalize it has because it used to feel like you were doing nice things to get me naked. Now it feels like you do them because you like me,” I say. “There’s a difference.”

He side-eyes me but doesn’t say anything.

“I just don’t want to let this go unchecked, and then everything gets messed up,” I say. “I quite like fucking you, Finn Miller.”

“Are you saying that you don’t think you act girlfriend-y?”

“Um, no. I don’t.”

He hums. “Okay. So, the reminder that went off yesterday to ensure that I make a dentist appointment was because … why?”

I stare at him. “Because you can’t get in when the season starts, and I don’t want to hear you complain about a cavity until February.”

“Oh, all right. What about my hoodies? Where the fuck are they? I tried to find one last night after my workout, and that entire side of my closet is empty.”

I point at him. “If you didn’t leave your apartment so freaking cold, I wouldn’t have to bundle up like it’s Antarctica and then accidentally wear them home. That’s on you.”
