“Yeah, I’m down.” He called from the kitchen. Sounds of chopping on the cutting board and the drone of the blender drifted over as Jax prepared snacks.
A few minutes later, he walked into the living room holding a food tray.
It should be illegal the way those gray sweatpants hung on him… unapologetically hinting at every bulge and every muscle.
Fuck… stop it.
I looked away from his biceps and how his shirt clung to his fit body, like it was a designer brand and not a basic T that I picked up for him at Target.
That’s not any better. No.
I smiled as he handed me a chocolate smoothie—my favorite—and laid a plate of chopped veggies and humus on the coffee table. He scooted next to me on the sofa, wrapping his arm around my shoulder… his warm, muscular arm.
A shiver coursed down my spine as my heart started pounding. My fingers itched to brush against skin, to wrap my hands around his.
Damn. Get a hold of yourself. That was so inappropriate. Luckily, Jax didn’t seem to notice anything; his eyes were glued to the television screen.
Just three months—then Jax would graduate and move out, and I wouldn’t have to spend every day chastising myself. Why couldn’t I just stop checking him out?
I took a deep sip of the shake. It was a tiny bit bitter—he must have used dark chocolate—but still so good. Jax was always trying to keep things healthy.
Even though living with him kept me half-mad with guilt, I couldn’t imagine how lonely the house would be once he moved out. Who was I going to watch movies with? I could barely picture living in this big house… with his dad working late and my stepson moved away for college.
Hopefully, I wouldn’t have an empty nest for too long.
FIVE
JAX
I watched my stepmother out of the corner of my eye as she sipped her smoothie. Delila’s plush lips parted as her little pink tongue darted out to lick chocolate off her lips. I made it special for her—with extra chocolate to hide the taste of the Benadryl pills I’d crushed up and mixed in.
Delila sighed in pleasure as she took another sip, and I felt myself stiffen in my sweatpants.
This was more than just wrong; I was going to do something truly monstrous.
But I had to do it.
Delila had no one looking out for her. No one willing to do right by her. I would never leave her to face that alone. To protect her from all the cruelty the world wanted to throw at her, I was willing to be the one to make cruel choices and leave her innocent and sweet.
If it made me a monster, so be it. I’d become a monster for her.
Anything for her.
Mentally, I went through the checklist again and again. I only had three chances to do this, and I knew it was going to upset her. Best to get it right the first time.
I was half hard already, just at the thought of it.
She leaned against me, her soft body pressing closer, as if she instinctively knew that I was there to give her what she needed. She blinked as she watched the movie, her eyelids slowly getting heavier.
Barely twenty minutes had gone by after she finished her drink before her head drooped against my chest. I waited until she was snoring faintly before I leaned forward and softly clicked the remote, turning the movie off.
Carefully, I pulled her into my arms bridal style, lifting her gently. I carried my stepmom up the stairs to her bedroom.
Laying her down in the center of her bed… bracing for the moment that I made a wrong move… sure that she was going to wake up.
But Delila kept snoring lightly, eyes shut tight.
My fingers trembled faintly as I unbuttoned her pretty floral shirt. Releasing button after button, until I pulled her blouse open, revealing a lace bra. The red one with a little bow. Right in the front, gleaming in the low light, was a golden clasp. The answer to every one of my prayers.
