“Nothing.”

I should probably leave it there. Instead, because humiliation has most likely destroyed whatever remains of my self-preservation, I reach over and touch the tip of her nose with one finger.

“This. When you laugh really hard, you do this little scrunchy thing.”

Her eyes stay on mine. “Do I?”

“Yeah.”

I don’t know who moves first. One second my finger is still near her face, and the next Flora is kissing me.

I sink into it almost immediately.

Her hand comes up to the side of my neck, mine slides into her hair, and the conversation disappears as easily as if we’d never been having one. I shift closer until there’s no longer an unnecessary stretch of couch between us, and Flora leans back against the cushions, pulling me with her.

We’re just kissing because we can, because her mouth is warm and familiar now, because I like the little sound she makes when I kiss the corner of it and the way her fingers tighten briefly at my waist when I settle closer.

Eventually, I pull back just far enough to look at her.

Her hair is mussed from my hands, her cheeks are pink, and when she smiles at me, her nose does the thing again.

I kiss it.

Flora groans and shoves at my shoulder, laughing.

“Sorry,” I say, not remotely sorry, and kiss her again.

CHAPTER 30

THE THIRD FAIRY

Primavera1959

I forgot to tell you something

The bracelet came

I love it.

Like an unreasonable amount

Unreasonable seems dramatic, I now realize

But we have corresponded long enough for you to know that dramatic is the baseline

The Third Fairy

Fair

Primavera1959

I thought it would be mostly pink because that’s what you mentioned in your first message, but I love all the other stones you picked

It looks like something I would have chosen for myself

The Third Fairy

I’m glad you liked it
