Con looks over at his name being yelled. “Yes, Pres?”
“I need you to fetch Theo early. I don’t care what excuse you use. I want him back here.”
Legs walks in with Hero in her arms, a worried expression on her face.
“You okay?” I ask as Havoc keeps barking out orders.
“I can’t get hold of Midas. Hero has been up most of the night with an ear infection, so it’s not like him not to answer when he knows our boy is sick.”
Now Havoc isn’t the only one with a bad feeling. I look over at Powers, who zeros in on me like a homing beacon.
“What’s wrong?”
“Legs can’t get a hold of Midas.”
Powers doesn’t tell her she’s overreacting. He pulls out his cell phone, and when it just rings, he ends the call and tries another number. Shaking his head, he calls someone else. The others must clue in that something’s wrong, but before they can ask questions, he barks into his phone.
“Kruger, can you patch into the cameras at the racetrack? I can’t reach anyone there, and Legs is worried.”
He puts the call on speaker. “Shit, gimme two seconds. Hold on.” I vaguely hear Kruger muttering something to Nathan before cursing spills out over the phone. Powers takes it off speaker and steps back.
Legs grips my arm, and I let her. Her nails are going to leave bloody half-moon scars.
“I’m on my way.” He disconnects and speaks to Havoc, but his eyes are locked on Legs. “There’s been an explosion. Emergency services are on their way. No news about casualties just yet.”
“Oh my god,” Legs whimpers as she sways. I reach for Hero just as Tina and Rose rush over and grab her. I give them grateful looks as I cuddle Hero close.
Powers cups Legs’s face. “That man would crawl through fire to get home to you. Do not give up on him now. I’m going to head down and find him, I swear it.”
“Okay, Powers.”
“Good girl.” He kisses her forehead before turning to me with an apology in his eyes.
I swallow down my fear. This is who he is. I grab his cut with my free hand and yank him down for a quick kiss before whispering against his lips. “Go, but be safe.”
“You’re not going alone,” Havoc insists. “This fucker is—”
Havoc’s phone rings just as Tink’s does. I swallow, feeling the pressure tighten around my ribs.
“God, not again,” Tink cries out.
“We’re on our way,” Havoc snaps, his eyes wild. “Someone tried to grab Star. Ambros and Citi are an hour away at Citi’s therapy appointment.”
I grit my teeth. Ambros insists on going with her because of what happened with James, but if anything happens to Star…
“Go, I’ll hold down the fort here,” Blade tells Havoc, who swallows and nods, his eyes going to Powers.
“Make sure Kruger meets you there, and take a fucking prospect.”
“On it.” Powers leans over and kisses me hard once more. “Grab Lucy. I’ll feel safer if she’s with you.”
“Okay. Please be careful.”
“I’m coming home, I promise. I love you.”
I swallow hard, choking on all the things left unsaid. “I love you too.”
He takes off. Havoc and Neveah follow right behind him.
