“Really?”
I nod.
“I’ll have Rochelle get in touch about the paperwork and our first steps.” He slowly stands, and I place my hand on his shoulder. “The first thing I’ll do is hire my top PI to find her. That way we are ready to serve her papers and have her arrested.”
Grabbing a business card off my desk, I hand it over.
“Also, call this number and let them know that I sent you. They will make sure you have a safe place to sleep, and that you have food and medication.”
He stumbles, and I grab him by the arms to steady him.
“Mr. Mitchell…I don’t know what to say or how to thank you. You’re far too kind.”
“Anyone who treats the person they claim to love the way your wife has treated you deserves to lose everything. When I’m done with her, she’ll regret the day she ran and left you to die.”
More tears well in his eyes, but Mr. Rogers holds out his shaky hand, and I grip it firmly.
“I’ll find a way to pay you back. I swear.”
“Don’t worry about that. Let’s just stay focused on the task of finding and bringing Mrs. Rogers back to face her crimes.”
“Thank you,” he says, and leaves my office.
He’s barely out the door when it opens again, and Rochelle sticks her head in.
“Camille is here,” she says.
What the hell does she want?
“Let her in.”
I walk over to my espresso machine and prep it as Camille enters. I ignore her and only speak once my coffee is underway.
“Camille, I didn’t expect to see you again,” I say, turning to face her.
She hasn’t come to talk business. Her hair is loose, and she’s wearing a sexy dress under the long coat. For just a second, I wonder if sleeping with her will solve my Emily obsession. I feel sick to my stomach the moment the thought enters my head. Further evidence that the little siren has slipped deeper into my bones than I’ve ever wanted anyone to reach.
“I came to apologize,” she says, flipping her hair over her shoulder and showing off her neck.
So, she thinks she can seduce me. Hilarious.
“Apologize for what?”
“For showing up at Rob’s funeral without asking you and for the way I acted.”
She steps closer, putting a hand on her waist to reveal the little black dress.
“I know what our arrangement is, and I overstepped.”
Camille reaches out to run a finger down my chest. I snatch her wrist hard, and her eyes go wide.
“Don’t touch me.”
I release her and turn to make my coffee, adding a shot of whiskey for good measure.
“Alden, why are you being like this? We’re great together.”
“Are we?”
