“He’ll bring your pizza and the drinks. It’s best if you don’t go away from me while we’re here.”

I gave him a look. “You’re the most dangerous person here.”

Again with that terrifying teeth-baring. “Exactly.”

“Exactly?” If he didn’t realize how faulty his logic was, suggesting that it made sense to seek out the most dangerous element in a place, I wasn’t about to explain it to him. “Fine. What do you want in return for answering my questions?”

“Answering mine.”

I hesitated. “But you know everything already.”

“I can’t think of anything else I’d want.”

“But you couldn’t just answer my questions, because you’re always about the equal exchange, the deal.”

He leaned on the table, looking like he was about to snap it. “Was that a question? Would you like to learn more about me?”

I pressed my spine against the back of the wooden booth, my hands in my lap. “Sorry, no. All right. First question. Would you like to start or shall I?”

“Ladies first.”

Oh bother. Now he was pretending to have manners? I gave him a tense smile. “Where does Clark work?”

“All over the world. My turn. What do you love about your husband?”

I hmphed. “All over the world? Nuh uh. Where, exactly, does he go to work every day when he’s not on business trips.”

He narrowed his eyes then shrugged. “In the downtown office building you think he works at. It’s actually a Council building, but it’s the same address on a map.”

“So all over the world is when he’s on his business trips?”

“That’s another question. First, you answer mine.”

“What do I love about my soon-to-be-ex-husband? Everything. He’s perfect…or I thought he was before I realized he’s not the person I knew.”

“Everything? Nuh uh,” he said with a mocking curl of his lips. “What exactly do you love about your husband.”

“You really want to hear this? Fine. I love his warmth most of all. I’m so cold, emotionally and physically, but he’s there, and suddenly, I feel practically human. I love the way he makes waffles on Sunday mornings, and the way he touches me like he’d die without me. I love the way he hums when he shaves. He has a beautiful voice, but you can only hear it if he’s not aware he’s using it. I love the way he dances with me in the kitchen after the kids are in bed.”

“And the sex?”

I glowered at him. “You do not want to hear about sex with my soon-to-be-ex-husband.”

“I do, actually.”

“You’re not normal.”

His bared teeth came with a dimpled chin that time. “I know. I’m extraordinary.”

“The sex is great.” I threw up my hands. “I don’t have anything to compare it to.”

“You’re looking forward to having something to compare it to?” he asked with a cocked head. “Because I could take you now and give you an experience that you’d never forget.”

I slapped him.

It was so loud. He leaned back slightly, putting the backs of his fingers to his face where there was absolutely no mark while my hand throbbed.

“You don’t ask someone married to your relative to sleep with you!” I bit out.
