"You didn't tell me this was what we were doing," Flynn says in a voice not meant for me to hear.
Anton doesn't look at him. He's looking out the windshield, watching the traffic. "You didn't need to know."
"You took the wife of Dante Di Zaro," Flynn snaps in a low, pissed-off voice. "Do you understand what that means?"
"It means he'll negotiate."
"It means you've woken up a monster. Are you prepared for what that looks like?"
Anton finally turns to look at him, and something cold and cruel flickers across his face.
"You need to remember who you are talking to."
Ignoring the warning, Flynn shakes his head. "This is reckless, Anton. Acting on impulse is careless, not to mention dangerous. Now every soldier Dante Di Zaro has is going to be looking for this car, this woman, and you."
Anton looks away. "Dante Di Zaro won’t meet with me, so I will make him."
“You did this because he wouldn’t meet with you?”
Anton looks at Flynn. "That, and he is an arrogant sonofabitch who has cost me a lot of money by standing in the way of me and my casino. Now he's going to sit across from me and give me what I want, or he's not getting his wife back."
“Which is?”
“Fortune.”
Flynn doesn’t react. But I can tell he’s itching to.
“Jesus,” he finally mutters. “You have no idea what you’ve done.”
Flynn meets my eyes in the rearview mirror, then looks back at the road.
He doesn't say anything else.
But his hands tighten on the steering wheel.
He thinks his boss is an idiot.
“Where are you taking me?” I demand from the backseat.
“You’ll find out in due course, Mrs. Di Zaro,” Anton says, sounding proud and unhinged at the same time. “As will your husband.”
Dante.
My chest cracks.
He doesn't know yet.
But he'll know soon.
Flynn is right about one thing.
Anton isn’t ready for what's coming when he does.

DANTE
Fortune is packed this afternoon. I stand on the mezzanine with a glass of scotch, watching the casino sing with light, money, and sound.
