My mind wandered to the only light in my life at the moment, and she didn’t even know it. Yara Fairchild. From the moment I learned her name a year ago, it had engraved itself into my heart. I could do without the last name since I wanted nothing more than to change it, but it was tied up with an ungrateful woman at the moment.

Patience, I reminded myself.

I didn’t know what it was about Yara, but she had me all in. One look at her mapped out my entire future and highlighted all my past mistakes. For her, I would be the best version of myself. For her, I would bow the fuck down. Baby really just had it like that, and I hadn’t even had the privileges of feeling her lips on mine or tasting her sweet-ass pussy . . . yet.

When I pulled into the four-car garage at home, I frowned because Aniya’s luxury pink car was there.

“Fuck.”

I thought about turning my ass around and going to a hotel, but then I realized that was only allowing her to win. This was my shit, so I would be here whenever I wanted. Her time was ticking anyway. Begrudgingly, I got out and walked through the door.

There was a time when Aniya would have dinner waiting after work, and we would eat together and talk about our days before finishing the night in each other’s arms. That hadn’t happened in a long while. All I smelled walking into my home now were candles and Pine-Sol.

“Is that you, G?” Aniya called from the living room that was just off the foyer where I entered.

I fought the urge to roll my eyes like a bitch. That was what this woman did to me though.

“Yeah.”

She came out of the living room and walked up to me. Her hands touched my chest, and I immediately wanted to chop those mothafuckas off.

Two more weeks.

I leaned down and brushed a kiss along her jawbone. I wanted to spit the kiss out as soon as I did it, but I decided to play it off and act my damn age instead.

“What you doin’ home so early?” I asked as I took my shoes off.

She scoffed as she looked up at me. Aniya really was a beautiful woman. She’d always been pretty, with her wild hair and smooth skin. Her heart-shaped face and pouty lips were unique, but I couldn’t see past the ugliness inside her anymore. Nothing about her turned me on like it used to.

“I needed an afternoon off. Can you believe Yara tried to get out of going to a consult for me? The bitch better be glad she even has a job. She tried to ruin my whole day, talking about she had an appointment to get her medicine for her clown’s disease or whatever it is.”

“Crohn’s disease.” I corrected her before I clenched my jaw tight.

Aniya waved her hand at me lazily. “Whatever. She thinks I’m stupid. She claims to need this so-called medicine at least once a month. It’s a joke. She’s lucky I don’t fire her.”

“Isn’t she just a receptionist? Don’t you have designers to do consults for you if you don’t want to do them?” I asked, confused.

“She was the first person I saw, so I told her to do it,” Aniya explained.

“You been havin’ her do all type of shit she ain’t even supposed to be doin’. You lucky she don’t quit.”

Aniya laughed loudly. “The bitch can’t afford to quit.”

I shook my head at her and walked toward the stairs. “I’m about to take a shower. I need you to do another drop for me tonight. Promise this is the last one. I got someone else to do them goin’ forward.”

Aniya looked irritated, but I didn’t give a fuck. There had been a time when she begged me to do drops. Her ass wanted to move my drugs like a damn mule so bad. She wanted to be down for me and prove that she was wifey, but I never wanted to put her in that position. If my empire went down, I would make sure she wouldn’t go down with it or me. But all that changed a year ago. I had been convincing her to drop drugs and money off all around The Bay. I could tell she didn’t want to do it, but my guess was that she thought because she had the commissioner under her thumb, she was safe. How wrong she was. Even if Kyle Knight’s bitch ass didn’t come through for me, I’d make sure she went down one way or another, even if it was death. I’d be damned if I spent any more energy on her ass.

Aniya huffed and mumbled something under her breath as she padded back into the living room as I made it to the top of the stairs. That was a good thing because I hated the way she talked about Yara. My baby. The funny thing was, Yara had no clue she was my baby. My favorite girl. Hell, my favorite person. I was close with my parents and Turbo, but it had been a really long time since I felt like I actually had a partner—my person. Until Yara came along.

We didn’t spend much time together. She kept her distance because she worked for my wife, but that was all about to come to an end as well. In fact, I was going to start really applying pressure tomorrow. Fuck Aniya. She would be out of the way soon, anyway, and that day couldn’t come soon enough.

Chapter Two

YARA

“I swear that bitch just hates you, Yara. She knew good and damn well she could have sent me to do the consult last night,” Paris said from where she perched on the edge of my desk.

Somehow I knew if I reached out and touched her mocha-colored skin, it would be hot, because my girl was pissed right now.
