By the time I got comfortable, Kyle had shuffled over to the chair next to Turbo and sat down.
“What’s the status of this shit wit’ my wife?” I asked, ready to get down to business.
“Mr. Grant, you know I have to take my time with this. If I don’t, my job, . . . my life could be at risk. I wouldn’t do well in prison—”
“I really don’t give a fuck.” And I didn’t. Long as I got what I needed, I didn’t care what happened to this man.
The DA looked flustered. “I understand, but—”
“I really need my wife behind bars and this case against me gone.”
The DA sighed loudly. “She’s working with the commissioner. He’s my boss. There’s only so much I can do. I will say that our last meeting was promising. He’s starting to believe that she’s been lying to him and that she’s really behind your empire. If I could just have a couple more weeks . . .”
My hand stroked my beard as I zoned out. The fucks I had to give for this situation were nonexistent. All I had was rage boiling just beneath the surface and an urgency to get this situation wrapped up. It had taken up over a year of my life, and I was ready to move the fuck on.
When I found out that Aniya met with the commissioner to build a case against me, I was devastated. We met when we were in high school. She’d been with me through it all. I was a badass kid that got into the streets at a young age, and she was my rider. She allowed me the space to grow into the man I was today, so I couldn’t understand why she turned on me.
Money.
Greed.
Power.
The truth was, Aniya hadn’t been the same in the past few years. She grew cold, mean, and distant. The money and luxurious lifestyle I provided for her had gone to her head. The once down-ass chick and around the way girl I grew up with was gone. In her place was a bougie, entitled bitch who wanted to set me up, destroy everything I owned, and take all my money.
“You tellin’ us this shit’s almost over?” Turbo asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
The DA nodded as he sat back in his desk chair and loosened up his tie. “It’s almost over. I just need a little longer to orchestrate an arrest. What would help is to get evidence of her doing one more drop. There’s no way the commissioner can ignore that.”
“You hear that, nigga?” Turbo asked as he reached across the desk and slapped my arm. Nigga was always such a jolly mothafucka.
I ignored him and looked into the DA’s eyes. He was an older Black man with wrinkles around his eyes and lots of gray in his short hair. I could tell his ass was tired. Not just today, but with this job. I wondered why he hadn’t retired yet. I guess it was a good thing for me that he hadn’t. It was hard to get this nigga in my pocket. If he retired, the pull I had within the police force would cease. Granted, I would just try to get at the new DA by any means, but with everything I had going on right now, I couldn’t afford any setbacks.
I leaned forward and pressed my elbows into the desk. “You like livin’, Kyle?”
The DA visibly gulped. I watched his Adam’s apple bob in disgust. Bitch-ass nigga.
“Y-yes.”
I nodded and stood up slowly. “You got two weeks. If my wife ain’t behind bars clutchin’ divorce papers in fourteen days, I’ma kill you, the commissioner, and my wife and be done wit’ this shit.”
I walked toward the door, not bothering to wait for a response. I knew Turbo was right on my heels. Since we were kids, when I moved, he moved, and vice versa.
Outside, we walked to our respective cars parked right next to each other. Before either of us got in, Turbo asked, “You good?”
“Yup.” I nodded. I was anything but good, but I knew I would be. I had too much to live for.
My mind drifted to the pretty little someone that lived inside my heart, but Turbo brought me back to reality before I could really get lost.
“You sure you wanna go through wit’ this shit? I been seein’ how it got you all wound tight, more so than usual. We can figure somethin’ else out. If we just kill Niya, we can get through this shit.”
“We past that now. She done given up too much information. Even without her, they can still get to us. Besides, I want her ass to suffer. Death is too much of a gift for her ass. I want her to live wit’ her decisions.”
“Whatever you wit’, I’m wit’,” Turbo said before he dapped me up and got into his car.
I got into mine as well and took in a deep breath. I didn’t really want to be out and about, but I definitely didn’t want to bring my ass home in case Aniya was there. The past year and some change had been hard as fuck for me, pretending like shit was sweet with her. If I could snap her damn neck, I would in a heartbeat, but I was serious when I said death was too good for her. Patience would win in this war, and it was almost time to cross that finishing line.
I really wanted to take a hot shower and chill, so I decided to throw caution to the wind and go home. Hopefully Aniya had booked a spa treatment or some shit so I didn’t have to be bothered with her.
