“Sorry,” he said. “I’ll be more careful next time.”

His apology was as insincere as they came. I wanted to throw it back at him.

“Vaughan.” Callie touched his arm, and the most ridiculous feeling came over me. Possession. I wanted to slap her hand away and say MINE.“We have to go. The movers are coming soon.”

Movers?

“Yeah.” Vaughan cast a wary gaze between me and Alex, and then stuck out his hand. “Sorry man. I wanted to thank you for helping with my brother, Daniel, two weeks ago. I was rude that night, but I appreciate you looking at him.”

Alex looked at Vaughan’s hand but then took it, and shook. “No problem man. I hope he’s okay.”

“He’s better.”

I opened my mouth to say something, but Callie touched Vaughan’s arm again. “Staci just texted, movers are there.”

Bitch please, she didn’t even take her damn phone out.

“I’ll see you around, Kenzi.”

They turned, rather abruptly, and I watched them walk down the street to a Ford Focus. The entire exchange had me agitated, on edge and also wondering who Callie was. Was he moving in with her? Was she his girlfriend?

And why did it matter?

Alex tugged my hand, and we headed back towards my apartment block.

“So…” he started. I looked at him just as he rubbed the back of his neck. “Who is that guy?”

I cast a cursory glance over my shoulder, watching the Focus drive down the road.

“He’s the assistant Coach for my Dad’s hockey team.”

“Is that all he is?”

I turned my gaze ahead of me. “He’s no one important.”

I was lying, I could feel it, but could it still be considered a lie if you didn’t know the real answer?
