He paused when the shift reached my knees, his dark eyes locking onto mine. I held his gaze, breathing through the tension that pulled tight between us.

He gathered the fallen linen, folding it with the same measured care he had given his own velvet, and placed it atop the stack beside the pool.

We stood bare in the open air, surrounded by the quiet rustle of the grove and the steady thunder of the falls. The morning sun bathed the high clearing in light, warming our skin as cherry blossom petals drifted around us.

Drystan stepped forward, his foot resting inches from mine. He cupped the side of my face, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw with agonizing slowness, savoring the touch.

He leaned down, stopping when his mouth was a breath away from mine.

He held the distance for a fraction of a second, letting me feel the weight of the pause, the finality of the space remaining between us.

Then he closed it.

The kiss was slow and deep, deliberate in its intensity. There was no frantic urgency, only a profound, deliberate focus as his mouth claimed mine. His fingers threaded into the wet hair at the back of my head, while his other hand settled against the small of my back, drawing me completely against him.

I tilted my head, opening to him as the warmth of his body enveloped mine. The world narrowed to the taste of the warm spring, the scent of his skin, and the steady, powerful rhythm of his pulse beneath my hands.

The petals fell softly over us, marking the silence as we stood entwined beside the water, bound by a quiet truth that needed no name.

Chapter 3

The kiss did not end so much as it changed, deepening into a fluid, inevitable rhythm. His hand at the small of my back, which had rested as light as a petal on the water, pressed against me with a slow, confident pressure that pulled the full length of my body flush against his. I had always wondered what it would feel like to be held with the complete, unyielding gravity of him.

One of the things I loved about Drystan was his quiet consideration. He was instinctively attuned to every shift in my breath, every subtlety of my presence. It was a stark contrast to the village boys who had tried to court me, young men who never understood the patience required to build genuine intimacy. The few times I had agreed to spend time with an aspiring candidate brought forward by the elder women’s council, the outings had ended with me fending off clumsy advances. They had been boys, unready for the weight of devotion.

Drystan was a sovereign. His touch possessed such emotional depth that his very presence calmed the nervous fluttering of my heart, even as my pulse quickened in anticipation.

His other hand remained woven through my silver hair, his fingers long and strong against the back of my head, supporting me. The women in my family had always treated our hair with reverence, passing down a quiet tradition of care I had kept for years. His touch received and recognized that heritage, instilling in me an unfamiliar, quiet pride. It was not pride in my own appearance, but the realization that my line was worthy of his royal hand. I had never permitted myself to entertain such a thought before, yet he gave me leave to feel it without a single word.

The shift in his posture resonated deep within me, setting off a delicate, self-perpetuating cycle of longing. The kiss, once measured, grew hungry. His disciplined composure, the defining trait of his public life, fractured beneath the weight of desire. His breathing roughened against my mouth, and mine frayed in response.

I had heard the village women whisper among themselves at the festivals, thinking the younger girls were out of earshot. I had listened as older girls described their first lovers in hushed, mechanical terms. None of their accounts resembled this. Their whispered stories were of awkward youths, drafty barns, and hurried acts that left the girls in tears and the boys boasting. None of them knew what it was to be brought down to the warm grass in a sacred clearing, surrounded by the endless drift of cherry blossoms.

He lowered me to the earth with deliberate slowness, never breaking the seal of our lips. Supporting me with one hand at my spine and the other cradling my head, he guided me down until the soft grass cradled my shoulders and his weight rested above me. The small indignities of my past, the disdainful glares of travelling traders, minor nobles, and tax collectors when a village girl spoke, vanished entirely in the embrace of a true king. Beside us lay the modest pile of folded clothes, and above, the blossom canopy spun in pink patterns that blurred as my eyes closed.

He pulled his mouth from mine, remaining close enough that his forehead rested against mine. Our breath mingled in the narrow space, the heat between us coiling into a concentrated force I had never known. I had not realized a body could feel this much at once.

He pressed his lips to the corner of my jaw, then to the sensitive place beneath my ear. He traced a path down the long line of my throat, stopping at the silver pendant resting over my collarbones. His mouth lingered over the disc, warm against the metal, while his fingers let the thin chain glide softly through his grip.

Trailing lower, his lips awakened every nerve ending like a warm summer rain. He returned to the hollow where my neck met my shoulder, the place he had first kissed in the water. His mouth lingered longer this time, bringing the sharp heat of his breath and the subtle graze of his teeth against my skin. A quiet gasp escaped me. My hands found his hair, my fingers tightening in the dark strands as a hidden part of me awoke to his touch.

His lips followed the slope of my collarbone, causing a tremor to ripple through me that he answered with a shudder of his own. When his mouth found the swell of my breast, my breath hitched.

I was no stranger to my own body. Raised in a village where older women did not teach us to fear our skin, I knew what my own hands could produce, a simple, private comfort. What his mouth evoked belonged to a different world entirely. As his lips closed over my skin and his tongue swept across me, the quiet ache I had carried for weeks transformed into a sharp, radiant bliss that flooded every corner of my mind.

A low sound pulled from my throat. He moved to my other breast, repeating the slow, devotional press of his mouth. My hips arched toward him instinctively, an ancient reaction originating from deep within.

His hands operated with fluent grace. One hand settled over my ribs, his thumb tracing the curve where my waist tapered, while the other slid down my flank in a slow, deliberate line. The light calluses on his palm, earned from years of holding reins and steel, caught softly against the smooth skin of my side. The subtle roughness heightened the heat between us. The courts of the empire would never guess that their emperor carried the tactile evidence of labour on his hands, a quiet truth he laid bare against my skin.

His mouth continued downward across my ribs and the dip of my belly, lingering over the curve of my hip bone. His tongue traced the crease where my thigh met my torso, turning a familiar part of myself into something sacred.

He looked up at me, his expression altered. The poised ruler who had bowed at the pool’s edge was gone. The man looking up from between my hips was entirely present, savoring the moment as though it were a rare luxury granted to a man who possessed everything else. His eyes were dark, his breath uneven, his thumb moving in slow, rhythmic circles against my inner thigh.

I understood his intention before he moved. He waited, giving me the silence required to turn away if I wished. Stopping him was impossible. My fingers tightened in his hair, my gaze steadying his, allowing him to see that I held no fear.

He leaned down.

The sensation was beyond words. As his mouth pressed against the center of my intimacy, an intense, overwhelming heat surged through me. It built with relentless speed, a tide of pure feeling that swept over my senses. My hips rose to meet his mouth, my fingers tangling deeper in his hair as unfamiliar sounds escaped my lips.
