“Enjoy it. Probably won’t last,” I warned, trying to sound more confident than I felt.
He laughed and drew me closer. I caught the front of his jacket when he kissed me, forgetting to be nervous for a moment. When he pulled back, I followed him before catching myself.
“Don’t start smiling,” I warned, noticing the amusement spreading across his face.
“Too late,” he answered, his smile widening.
I rolled my eyes, smiling too. He laid his jacket over a chair, and I took his hand. But once we sat on the edge of the bed, my fingers tightened around his.
He noticed immediately, his expression softening as he looked at me. “What is it?”
I looked at our hands, trying to find the courage to say what I needed him to know. “I haven’t done this before.”
He waited, and I made myself look up.
“I’m a virgin,” I admitted, feeling my face grow warm the moment the words left my mouth.
His expression changed. Heat rushed into my face.
“Don’t look at me like you trying to decide what to do with me,” I told him, suddenly wishing I could read his thoughts.
“I’m listening to you.” He shifted closer, his voice calm and reassuring. “You want me to stay?”
“Yes,” I answered without hesitation.
“Then I’m staying. We don’t have to do anything else tonight,” he assured me, keeping his hand wrapped around mine.
I searched his face, needing to know he meant it. “You’re not disappointed?”
“No,” he answered simply, without a moment of hesitation.
He said it so easily that some of the tension left my shoulders. I wanted him here. I just wasn’t used to saying what I needed and believing somebody would care.
“Kiss me again,” I whispered, lifting my eyes to his.
He brushed his hand along my cheek and did. This time, when the kiss ended, I stayed close instead of finding a joke to hide behind.
“Stay,” I whispered again, resting my hand against his chest.
“I’m here,” he assured me, his voice quiet against my forehead.
I rested my forehead against his and let myself believe him.
Chapter 14
After Jru told me she was a virgin, we stayed up talking for a while.
Nothing deep. Just regular shit. Music, food, places we’d been, places she wanted to go. Every now and then she’d laugh at something I said, then swear I wasn’t funny when I caught her doing it.
By the time we changed and got in bed, she was a lot more relaxed than she’d been earlier. The conversation followed us under the covers, getting slower the later it got. At some point, Jru stopped lying on her side and ended up halfway across me, her head on my chest and one leg thrown over mine.
Her answers got shorter until she stopped answering altogether.
I looked down at her, watching her sleep like she hadn't just made herself comfortable across my entire body. “Just gone use my chest like a fucking pillow. Bet.” I waited a second, almost expecting one of her smart-ass responses, but she didn't so much as twitch.
Nothing.
I smirked and rubbed my hand slowly down her back. She was knocked the fuck out, but sleep wasn’t hitting me yet.
