Behind her, Ashlynn completely lost her shit.
“OH MY GOD!”
“Ashlynn, baby, please!” Malachi pleaded, making everybody laugh.
I shook my head before looking back up at my wife.
“Jru Sinclair King, will you marry my crazy ass? Again. But this time because you actually want to?”
She was crying so hard she could barely speak. For a second, she just nodded, staring at me with the biggest smile I’d ever seen on her face.
“Yes,” she finally managed, laughing through her tears. “Yes, Ezra. Of course I’ll marry you!”
I slid the diamond onto her finger, and before I could stand completely, she threw her arms around my neck. I caught her carefully, laughing as she kissed me with tears still running down her cheeks.
The cheers behind us grew louder, but I barely heard them. All I cared about was the woman in my arms.
“You happy, baby?” I whispered against her lips.
She nodded, smiling as she pressed her forehead against mine. “So happy. I love you.”
“I love you too.” I kissed her again before glancing at the ring sparkling on her finger. “And you better be happy, because that damn thing cost too much for you to be walking around mad at me.”
She smacked my chest, laughing. “Ezra!”
I pulled her closer, grinning. “What? I’m just saying.”
Twenty minutes later, Ashlynn had taken enough pictures to fill an entire damn photo album, Yara was making sure the photographer captured every angle of the ring, and Malachi was complaining that I’d officially ruined every anniversary gift he’d ever bought his wife.
Jru stood beside me, holding her hand beneath the hanging lights while Ashlynn admired the diamond for what had to be the fifteenth time.
“Girl, this ring is ridiculous!” Ashlynn exclaimed, turning Jru’s hand toward the light. “Ezra, I take back at least three of the bad things I said about you.”
I laughed, slipping an arm around my wife’s waist. “Only three? After all this shit?”
“Don’t push it,” she warned, grinning as she released Jru’s hand.
Malachi shook his head beside her. “Man, I’m never letting my wife help you plan another damn thing. Now she looking at me like I owe her another wedding.”
Ashlynn turned toward him with a sweet smile that didn’t fool anybody. “Well, since you brought it up—”
“Nah, hell nah.” He held up both hands, backing away as everybody laughed. “Don’t even finish that sentence.”
I was still laughing when Jru suddenly grabbed my forearm. Her fingers tightened around it, and I looked down, expecting her to complain about her feet hurting again.
Instead, she was standing completely still.
“Baby?” I asked, noticing the strange expression crossing her face.
She looked down at the ground, then slowly lifted her eyes toward mine. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out at first.
“Ezra…” Her voice sounded different enough to make me straighten immediately.
“What is it? You hurting?”
She swallowed, glancing down at her dress before looking back at me.
“Baby, I think my water just broke.”
