We had the conversation about being single. I was then and I still am now.
“How long have you been with him?” he asks, folding his arms in obvious annoyance.
“None of your business.”
His brows knit together.
“He know about…me?”
I almost laugh. “There’s nothing to know. It was one night.”
“Maya, did you bring sunscreen?” Reid comes around the corner and grins. “Hey, Cash. I see you’ve met my sister.
Cash’s mouth opens but nothing comes out at first.
“Reid…is your brother?” Now he looks confused.
“I told you my brother lives in Atlanta.” I hand Reid the sunscreen. “Here. I’ll be right out.”
He nods, glances between us once, and then goes back the way he came.
“So, he’s not…your boyfriend.”
I scowl. “Uh, no. Definitely not. My big brother.”
He closes his eyes and seems to be regrouping.
“So, let me get this straight. You thought Reid was my boyfriend and you weren’t sure whether or not I cheated on him with you.” I almost chuckle. “That’s fun.”
“I’d never knowingly do something like that,” he says defensively.
“And neither would I.” I cock my head. “Are you here with a date?”
He quickly shakes his head. “No. Just hangin’ with my roommates.”
“Reid will be highly amused to find out you thought he was my boyfriend.”
He grimaces. “You’re not going to tell him I said that, are you?”
“Why not? He’ll think it’s funny.”
“Are you going to tell him we hooked up?” he demands incredulously.
I laugh. “I’m twenty-six years old and live in New York City on my own. I’m pretty sure Reid knows I’m not a virgin.”
“Yeah, but…” Now he seems confused again. “I don’t think we should let people know what…we did.”
I narrow my gaze. “What, are you embarrassed that you had a one-night stand?”
“No! I just don’t think it’s appropriate.”
I shrug, even though it stings a little. “Okay. No skin off my teeth. Take care, Cash.”
With that, I breeze past him and go back outside.
I’m a little bummed that he seems embarrassed about our summer interlude. Oh, well. It’s his loss if he wants to be weird about the fact that we slept together, especially considering he called out his ex’s name in his sleep. That was when I knew I had to leave without saying goodbye.
I get outside and Serena comes over to me. “Hey! I’m so glad you’re here. Have you met everyone?”
