She shook her head and pressed the tissue beneath her eyes.
“She’s at the doctor.”
“Is she okay?”
Don’t tell me I was the cause of her getting sick. Fuck.
Aubrey looked down at her phone.
“You should go there now.”
I stepped closer to the desk.
“What doctor? What’s going on with her?”
She picked up the phone and turned the screen toward me. The clinic’s name was above an address. Underneath it was a description of the services they provided.
My eyes stopped on abortion care.
I looked at Aubrey.
“She’s pregnant?”
Aubrey nodded and exhaled hard.
“I gotta stop this.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Going to save my baby and get my girl back. Send me that location,” I barked.
I was already opening the door when my phone vibrated.
I passed the receptionist without looking at her. Outside, I pulled up the address and got in the truck.
Melody was pregnant.
I sat there with my hand on the ignition for a second, trying to put that information together with the last time I had seen her. She had stood in my house telling me what Roman had done to her, and I had thrown his version of her daughter’s death right back in her face.
Now she was sitting in a clinic by herself.
“Fuck.”
I started the truck.
How long had she known? Had she found out after I put her out? Was that why she wouldn’t answer me?
I called again through the truck’s speakers. Every ring pissed me off more than the one before it.
“Pick up the phone, Melody.”
Her voicemail answered.
I ended the call and tightened my hands around the steering wheel.
She had been in my bed and in my kitchen, laughing with my girls. I could still picture her standing at the stove, looking over her shoulder when I came up behind her. I had been thinking about getting her back into my house while she was making an appointment to end a pregnancy I didn’t even know existed.
She was carrying my baby, and I hadn’t been given a fucking word about it.
