I shook my head. Nah, some people can’t be tamed.

Was Storie one of them?

I swept my hair behind my ear to keep it from falling in my face. I was sporting a lace front bob wig that I’d just gotten installed. With how crazy things have been, I felt like I might as well get a little make-over, thinking that it would uplift my mood.

It didn’t. Now I just looked different but I was still heartbroken by what had become of my business. And I was even more outraged since I’d had time to stew in it.

I clicked on yet another Skye Mercer and got a white woman in Sedona selling goat-milk soap. This bitch was more elusive than a man I’d asked, “So what are we?”

As far as I was concerned she didn’t exist.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” I blurted out loud.

My brother looked over at me. “Still can’t find this bitch?”

“I found somebody selling soap. You want some?”

“Depends. Can it wash away this bullshit?”

I closed the page and rubbed my temples in frustration. I was looking for anything I could find on this bitch. I needed to find where she was. I needed to make her pay for framing me for killing that horse. For causing Justice to ruin my family’s legacy.

I’d been searching for her all morning. Trying to come up with a plan that would make her pay for the position she left me and Kyle in. Instead, there was just dead-end after dead-end.

Oh, notifications galore about the downfall of Marceline’s. The name had been annihilated and was now synonymous with pests. As a matter of fact, whenever I clicked on an article about the restaurant, an ad for pest control appeared.

I hated this bitch with every vibrating fiber of my soul.

Unfortunately, nothing I found belonged to her. There were no social media pages for her. There were no articles about her anywhere. There wasn’t even a LinkedIn profile.

Meanwhile, my name came with pictures of closed restaurants and people making roach jokes in the comments.

I dragged the laptop closer.

Skye Mercer had managed to get comfortable in a house I could no longer enter. She knew my goddaughters’ bedtime routines. She had probably heard Justice complain about me while lying in a bed I had been invited into long before she showed up.

I typed her name into another search box.

“You gon’ wear the letters off that keyboard,” Kyle barked over his shoulder.

“I just can’t believe this,” I muttered.

He shook his head and turned his attention to me.

“We’ll get them, sis. You gotta chill. My boy went past the house. And he ain’t seen her car.”

My fingers stopped moving.

“Again?”

“Yep. He’s been by a few times. Same thing.”

“Maybe she was out with Rita?” I wondered.

“Iono. He’s driven by multiple times during different times of the day.”
