I’d barely finished a chapter when Justice’s name appeared on my phone.

Justice: Where you at?

Me: You have my location. You know where I’m at.

Justice: Don’t get smart with me. You eat?

Me: Just ordered something.

Justice: What? Make sure you eat protein and healthy fat. Carbs ain’t enough. U building a brain in your womb.

Me: OMG

Justice: [Photo of the menu with the omelette highlighted] GET THAT.

Me: That’s exactly what I ordered. With four pieces of turkey bacon. There. Can I write now, Daddy?

His reply came almost immediately.

Justice: Keep calling me that and you ain’t getting shit written tomorrow.

Me:

I put the phone down before the conversation kept me from doing anything productive. I had a goal of two chapters today.

Just as I slid it in my purse, it rang. The number was unknown and I couldn’t ignore it. It could’ve been an emergency with Keenan.

“Hello?” I greeted.

“Melody?”

Aria’s voice was strained. I sat up straight.

“What do you want?” I scoffed.

“Please don’t hang up.”

“Then talk.”

“I’m at the hospital. I’m having the baby,” she breathed.

I looked at my computer, where the cursor was still blinking in the middle of a sentence.

“What are you telling me for?” I asked.

“It hurts,” she cried. “I don’t have anybody here. Please come.”

My thumb hovered near the button to end the call.

The last time we were together, she had blood running from her nose and Roman’s excuses coming out of her mouth. Now she wanted me beside her bed holding her hand. Apparently, I had become useful again.

“Please, Melody.”

I closed my laptop.

Aria had adopted my son. She could refuse to cooperate for as long as she wanted, but right now she needed something from me.

“Which hospital?”
