“We got you. My driver will take you back to the hotel. I’ll come see you later,” he said as he brought me in for a kiss.
“You can have my leftovers!” Roman barked.
“Cool and after this, we’re going to Julian’s house,” Justice said, grinning.
Roman went still.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Julian ain’t got shit to do with this.”
“That didn’t matter when it was my parents,” I shot back.
He looked past me at Justice.
“My brother ain’t do nothing to her.”
Justice didn’t answer.
“Don’t touch him,” Roman said, pulling against the restraints. “You got me. Leave him out of it.”
I watched him struggle.
There it was. He could hear his own death coming and still insult me. Mention Julian, and suddenly he wanted to discuss who deserved what.
“Melody, please.”
My name sounded different coming out of his mouth that time.
“Please don’t do that. You know him.”
“I knew my parents, too.”
He shook his head, looking between all of us.
“Whatever you want. I’ll give you whatever you want.”
I wanted Golden old enough to complain about doing her homework. I wanted to call my parents and tell them about her. He couldn’t give me a damn thing I wanted.
I turned to Justice. “Thank you, baby,” I said to him.
I then marched out while Roman called my name. He was still begging for Julian when Justice closed the door.
I made it as far as the next room before my legs started shaking. There was an old chair against the wall. I sat down and pressed my hands between my knees.
Roman let out a bloodcurdling holler. I’d never heard him sound like that before. The torture had started.
He shrieked again. It was high-pitched. He was getting what he deserved for hurting my family. I got in the back of the SUV and allowed the driver to take me back to the hotel.
In the wee hours of the morning Justice came back to me. He came into the room while I was asleep and sank on the bed.
“It’s done.”
I cradled his face. Roman was dead. After years of running, he was gone.
“Do you want me to kill his brother?” he asked.
