“Oh my Goddess, you did not!” Hazel exclaimed. “You fu—”
Before she could continue her sentence, I slapped a hand over her mouth so Pavel wouldn’t hear. “Can you not scream it?! And how the hell did you get that from Daisy’s facial expression?!”
She gently pulled my hand away and lowered her voice. “Did you actually … fluff them both at the same time?”
“Don’t be censoring yourself now after all that!”
“Well, excuse me. We have two cute little babies here,” Hazel said, looking over at Daisy and Pumpkin, who were chasing each other through the flowers once more without a care in the world. “Can’t let them know how excited I am right now!”
“First off, they know what happened. Second of all, you can’t say anything to anyone!”
“Okay, but … how was it?! Two at one time?!” She giggled. “I’d die.”
“It was … I …”
“Okay, girl, it’s fine. You don’t have to tell me alllll the details now.” She looped her arm around mine and leaned closer to me. “But did Davix really leave without any open wounds? He hadn’t been healing fast at all when I saw him, which must mean that—”
Suddenly, the back door opened, and Pavel cleared his throat. “I gotta head out for a bit.”
“Okay,” I said, shooing him off because I wanted to know what the hell this all meant. When he finally closed the back door and I listened to his car pull out of the gravel driveway, I turned back to Hazel. “What does it mean?”
She grinned and hopped up. “Oh, nothing … nothing at all. Listen, I have to go too.” She hurried toward the forest where she had come from, giggling. “Oh, he’s going to get an earful from me when I see him next.”
Then she disappeared into the woods, leaving me all alone, listening to nothing but silence and the occasional … branch snap in the woods. I peered around, not spotting anyone, but still feeling someone’s eyes on me.
Burning into me.
Someone was watching me. I knew it.
Chapter Thirty-Nine
Davix
I glared out my office window and out into the forest, trying to suppress my wolf’s voice inside my head. He wanted to see Ember. It had been hours since I had last seen her, and I couldn’t get those pretty little moans out of my head.
“What’s wrong with you?” Linda asked from the door.
“Nothing.”
She shut the door and stalked into the room, her heels clicking against the floor, and Silas growled from the couch. I turned around, watching him roll his eyes in annoyance that she was actually here. And I had to stop myself from mirroring his expression.
“Are your wounds all healed?” Linda asked..
“I’m not in the mood, Linda.”
“You’re never in the mood nowadays, are you?” She moved closer to me and wrapped an arm around mine, tugging me closer. “Is it that girl who moved into town? Ever since you met her, you’ve been distant.”
“It’s not her.”
“She’s your mate, isn’t she?”
“No,” I said through gritted teeth. “Will you drop it?”
“You know that if you mate with her, this same problem will happen again and again and again. We’ll never break the curse, the cycle.” She curled her fingers around my bicep. “The closer we get to the full moon, the harder it will be for you, unless you reject her.”
“Drop it!” I snarled at her, though I didn’t pull myself away.
Because … she was right. I kept putting it off and putting it off and putting it off … when I knew that I had to reject Ember. I should’ve rejected her the moment I met her. She wouldn’t have found out what werewolves were. She wouldn’t have even known what was happening.
