I scrambled to my feet and slowly backed up, trying not to make any noise, break any branches, or step on any leaves. My heart pounded so hard that I could hear it in my ears, the only other sound coming from the tearing of skin on the attacker’s underbelly.
Blood sprayed everywhere, the girls getting it on their orange fur.
“Let’s go,” I whispered to them. “Run, now.”
But just as I was about to take off through the forest, the wolf turned around, and I caught sight of his piercing red eyes. I stayed, feet planted on the ground, and stared at him. Two times … this was two times that he had saved me.
He held my stare for a couple more moments before running off into the woods.
And all I could ask myself was … who the hell was this red-eyed monster?
Chapter Thirty
Ember
When my house came into view, I slowed down to a walk, my breathing a bit ragged.
I made it home in lightning time because I really hadn’t wanted to stick around for Rogue Attack on Ember: Part 3. Despite my short lifespan, I didn’t want to die any sooner than I had to. Not anymore anyway.
For the first time in a long time, I had found the will to live … not because I actually wanted to live, only so I could experience my first threesome, with both werewolves trying to prove themselves to me.
After giggling to myself, I held the back door open for the foxes. I wasn’t sure if Pavel wanted me to allow Daisy and Pumpkin into the house, but I didn’t care anymore. He could scold me however he wanted later … if he found out.
Both Daisy and Pumpkin hesitated right before the entrance, sniffing the room. They peered at each other for a moment, and then Daisy jumped in, and Pumpkin followed, slowly making their way around the room and taking in all the scents.
I locked the door behind me and dropped my backpack on the ground, near the wall.
What had been going on lately with those rogues? There were so many of them lurking in the woods, trying to attack … me. Was this what happened all the time? If Cade knew this, why hadn’t he told Pavel that Black Hollows was unsafe?
Daisy and Pumpkin ran up the stairs, and I hurried after them to ensure they didn’t make that much of a mess, especially in Pavel’s room. I couldn’t have that happening. He wasn’t even supposed to know I had befriended them.
I could just imagine him yelling at me now: What are you doing with these animals when you’re sick?! You should be spending more time in the hospital, not hanging out with wild savages who could have rabies.
Little did he know that his best friend was a wild animal.
Cade drifted through my thoughts, and I shoved him away quickly.
When I walked into my room, Daisy was already on the pillow, making herself comfy.
“So, what do you wanna do?” I murmured, crawling up with her.
Pumpkin jumped up after her sister and curled right by my side, tucking her head into her paws like a kitty so the light wouldn’t hurt her eyes. I turned onto the side, resting my head on the pillow and closing my eyes.
Cade’s stupid little smile filled my vision, and I balled my hands into fists by my sides, desperately trying to forget all about him.
Had Pavel really paid him to take me to the doctor? All this time too?
And me? Believing he was doing this out of the goodness of his own heart?
Daisy cuddled closer to me, almost as if she could feel my stress—no, anger. I forced out a steady breath and unballed my fists.
What was I even thinking? Cade was just as big of an asshole as Davix if it was true.
Maybe even bigger. Especially if he was hiding behind that good-boy attitude.
Heaviness weighed on my eyes, and I yawned in an attempt to stay awake. I wanted to be awake when Cade got here and before Pavel did because we needed to talk and I did not want Pavel asking any questions.
Suddenly, Pumpkin snapped her head up, and then Daisy followed, as if they’d heard a noise.
