“You do?!” I exclaimed, grabbing her hands. “That’s so cool.”

A small smile crossed her face. “You think so?”

“Um, yes! What’s the mark mean? That you have a mate?”

“How do you know that?”

“Because filthy romance books, duh?” I said. I had to fill my hospital time somehow.

Hazel sat beside me and smiled at the foxes who were hiding in the bushes. “Usually, when you see a scar on a werewolf’s neck, that means they’re mated. But … my pack has a curse on it. So, my scar means that I lost my mate.”

My excitement dropped, my lips forming a soft O. “I … I didn’t know. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. It’s kinda … a long story. It’s okay though. You can ask me anything about us.”

“What about Davix?” I asked, jealousy nipping at my insides. Maybe that was why he was such a little dramatic hoe all the time. Maybe he didn’t have a mate either and couldn’t be happy. “Does he have a mate?”

“Yes, Em. Yes, he does.” Another grin stretched across her face. “And you’ll never guess who it is.”

Chapter Eighteen

Ember

Jealousy nipped at my stomach. Mr. Drama Queen has a mate?! If they worked the same way they did in those books, then that meant … those bonds were sacred. And if he was treating me the way he was … then he didn’t respect the mate bond between him and her.

I scrunched my nose, then arched my brow. Maybe his mate rejected him.

My lips curled into a smirk. Obviously, I didn’t care, but served an alphahole right.

Hazel looped her arm around mine and tugged me toward the trees, leaving my art supplies in the backyard. “Come on. Let’s go to my house for a bit. I’ll tell you all about her on the way.”

After tossing my paintbrush closer to the easel, I headed with her down the pathway toward her house. Cade had told me not to go anywhere, but he wasn’t here right now. I’d take any punishment from him later.

“So?” I urged, spotting the foxes running after us. “Who is she?”

The babies scurried behind some thick brush, pausing every so often to stare.

“She’s waaaaay out of his league,” she said.

Way out of Davix’s league? How was that possible?

“Really?” I asked, crossing my other arm over my stomach. While I had asked, I really wasn’t sure I wanted to know about her because if she was really that pretty and Davix was basically cheating on her with me, what did that say about him?

And also, how could I compete with someone like her?!

I shook my head. What am I saying?! I’m not going to compete over an alphahole!

“Oh my Goddess, yes,” Hazel exclaimed, a huge grin on her face. “She’s, like, literally a Goddess of a woman, and that hoe doesn’t deserve any ounce of her.” She giggled. “But I still want them together because he’s all gooey around her.”

“Davix? Gooey?” I said, forcing myself to laugh, too, so I didn’t sound jealous.

“He doesn’t show it, but I can totally see it. He’s obsessed with her.”

“So, they’re not, like, a thing yet?”

“Not yet.”

“Why not?”
