But I’d have to see it every single fucking day.

Ember being happy without me. Ember getting pregnant. Ember being a great mom to their pups. Ember living her life without me.

Everyone in my pack would find a second-chance mate, if theirs had died.

Everyone except me. And I didn’t want anyone else.

I wouldn’t be able to see them the same way I saw Ember. I wouldn’t be able to live with them, date them, mate them, be a father. My legacy and the alpha bloodline would end with me, and maybe that was a good thing.

So this shit didn’t happen to anyone ever again.

My body fell limp, and I collapsed onto my side, staring at the pieces of banana bread that I had thrown against the wall in a fit of anger. Ember’s scent drifted through my nose, and I squeezed my eyes closed.

Why? Why? I didn’t understand this. I sobbed, not caring who heard me anymore. The pain was overwhelming me more than any physical wound could do. Another sob left my mouth, my eyes stinging.

Why did I have to reject her?

I was a terrible alpha, a terrible mate, a terrible fucking wolf who didn’t deserve to live.

I curled up into a ball and squeezed my eyes closed.

Because Ember was my mate.

Ember was supposed to be all mine.

Someone knocked on the door, but I ignored it. I didn’t want to see anyone. I didn’t want to socialize or talk or be the man that this pack needed. I just wanted my mate. I just wanted to see her one last time before I had hurt her, before I had ruined everything.

“Alpha Davix!” someone said outside the door, knocking again.

The pain tore through my insides, my wolf gone. Completely gone.

I couldn’t sense him at all anymore. Not since the rejection.

“Are you home? I need to talk to you!” the voice came again.

But I didn’t have the strength to stand up, or to walk to the door, or to pretend anymore. I missed her. I fucking missed her already, and it hadn’t even been half a day. She was supposed to be mine forever.

Suddenly, the door opened.

“Alpha? Oh my Goddess, Alpha! Are you okay?”

The woman knelt by my side, and I blinked my eyes for a few moments to see Janice, Ember’s nurse from the Silver Moon Medical Center. She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and tried to pull me upright.

“Alpha Davix, are you okay? Please, talk to me. Say something. What hurts?”

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

She opened and closed her mouth a handful of times, and then her eyes softened, as if she knew. “I’m sorry. Maybe now is not a good time.”

She placed me down and went to stand, but I caught her wrist.

“What is it? Is it about Ember?”

She paused for a moment, then nodded. “Yes.”
