Chapter Sixty-Seven

Alaric

“Davix,” Ember whispered, clutching her chest. Her heartbeat rattled through the forest, so violently that I could feel it through the dirt, against my paws, running through my entire body. “Davix, what did you do?”

Rage burned inside me at the thought of the Moon Goddess ever pairing them together.

He didn’t deserve her. I did.

Davix glanced down at her small fingertips digging into her skin, his jaw twitching. While shifted, I stared at Davix and Ember fifty feet away. Neither of them, nor Davix’s warriors, had noticed me, and it would stay that way.

Only the people I wanted to see me did.

“I reject you,” Davix whispered again, the words barely leaving his mouth.

That fucker did it. He actually fucking did it.

It wasn’t traditionally how a wolf rejected his mate; usually, wolves had to announce first and last names and titles within their respective packs. But it would suffice. Because by the look on Davix’s face, the bond between them was fractured.

By this evening, it would split entirely.

When Ember fell to her knees and wailed, Davix turned away with his entire body tense. It wasn’t a soft sob that I had heard before, but a bone-rattling wail that everyone could hear throughout Black Hollows.

And while I had caused this, while I had told him to reject her, for my benefit, I wanted him to hurt even more too.

I had caused her so much pain. I shouldn’t have forced Davix to reject her, should’ve let him do it on his own.

But it had taken too much time.

I had waited and waited and waited, and he hadn’t done it. And it had to be done.

She couldn’t have anyone else that she thought about anymore because she was mine.

“Ember!” someone shouted, running toward them from the forest. With a worried expression on her face, Davix’s sister crouched by Ember’s side and wrapped her arms around her shoulders, glancing up at Davix. “What did you do?!”

Davix stayed silent.

“Davix, what the fuck did you do?!” she shouted again.

“Rejected her,” he finally said between clenched teeth.

“You what?! You piece of shit!” she screamed, releasing Ember and shoving her hands against Davix’s back. He stumbled toward the house, and she shoved him again and again. “Get the fuck out of here, you asshole! Why would you do that?! And on her fucking birthday?!”

Another moment passed, and then Davix shifted into his wolf and disappeared into the woods. Ember was still on her knees, loud sobs leaving her mouth. Her shoulders trembled back and forth, and I could feel her pain in my heart.

I didn’t know why he mattered to her so much, nor why she loved him like this.

“Wh-why did he … I-I don’t know why … every-everything hurts, Hazel,” Ember cried.

“It’s because he’s an asshole,” she murmured. “A fucking asshole.”

One little fox, which I had seen running around Ember’s backyard, was sitting on the porch chair, glancing up at Ember crying. I remembered that they usually came in pairs, and I looked around to see the other one staring at me, her eyes narrowed.

Once Hazel helped Ember to her feet, she brought her into the house and then came back out for the smaller fox. She scanned the forest, her gaze landing on the other one. “Daisy! Come in here before you get hurt too. I’ll get you girls home soon.”

After giving me one final warning look, she ran to Hazel and followed her into the house. I sprinted through the woods, discreetly and quietly, slipping away into the fog and finding the rest of my packmates awaiting my return.

“The battle is over,” I announced to my pack. “We return home.”
