I still needed more information out of those fuckers.

“Where the fuck are they?” he asked.

“I told you that they aren’t here.”

“I don’t believe you. Where are they? This isn’t a fucking game. Wars will start. Your people will die.”

“My people won’t die. Your people will die.”

“Everyone in this fucking forest will.”

“Only the people you care about. You’re not part of my pack, so get the fuck off my property.”

He gritted his teeth and balled both his hands into tight fists. “Ember will die.”

“I don’t give a fuck about Ember.”

“You’re lying,” he said.

“No, I’m not. If you want, you can bring her here, and I’ll reject her right here, right now.”

“You’re a fucking liar.”

“I’m a liar?” I asked with a scoff. “You were the one who didn’t tell her that you still think about your mate, that you still talk about her, that you still care about her. Ember will always be second to you.”

“And you’ll never be her first choice,” he snarled.

His words hit me hard, and I had to do everything I could not to snap his neck right here, right now.

“If you love her the way my sister says you do, then go be with her. I already told her, and I already told my sister, and now I’m telling you again that I don’t care about her. If you want, bring her to me. I will reject her.”

“You won’t reject her,” Cade said. “You’re not that strong.”

Again, I forced myself to stay calm, void of any emotion.

“I will reject her. It’s what I was destined to do.”

Chapter Fifty-Nine

Ember

As Janice took the needle out of my arm, I stared into crimson-red eyes through the hospital window. That wolf … he was back. I had caught him this morning through my bedroom window, and now here.

“It’s almost your birthday, isn’t it, baby?” Janice asked.

I finally pulled my gaze away and peered over at her. “Unfortunately.”

Janice threw a playfully dirty look my way. “You’d better take that back.”

A giggle left my lips. “Okay, okay. Not unfortunately, but definitely not fortunately either.”

When I looked back into the forest, those red eyes were gone. If he truly didn’t want anything to do with me, I didn’t know why he kept stalking me. He should be gone, but it was almost like he wanted me to see him.

By the way that Cade and Pavel kept talking about what had happened when I eavesdropped on them earlier, he came from a powerful group of people. Hell, I had experienced him being able to take me with no trace. He should know how to stalk someone and them not know.

“And what makes it not fortunately?” Janice asked, peering out into the hallway, where Cade was talking—well, more like arguing—with Dr. Yoder. She chuckled. “I’d die to have a man that hot.”

“All right, you got me,” I said. “He is hot, and guess what. He told me he loves me.”
