“I love you too,” I murmured. “I love you so much.”

Chapter Fifty-Six

Cade

Less than an hour later, I was running through the woods in my wolf form. The wind whipped through my fur as I moved as fast as I could. Ember had claimed she was just being selfish, but she didn’t know what selfish meant.

No, her living for me—that was something different. It was something else completely.

At some point today, after I figured this shit out, I needed to go to the hospital. I needed to figure out more about Dr. Yoder. Because something wasn’t sitting right with me. No matter what, I wouldn’t be able to get it out of Ember. I could guarantee that.

I released a low growl, stalking through the woods toward Braveclaw. It hadn’t even been two fucking days since I had left to find Ember, and the leader was gone. Where? I didn’t know. How? Beat me. Nobody had any details. Nobody even knew where Braveclaw was.

We were hidden so deep in the forest. The only person who knew was …

Fuck.

Fuck, Davix couldn’t be that stupid, could he?!

Of course he was. He had to have him. He didn’t have any self-control.

The trees became thicker, the mountain sloping.

But how? I needed more information. Anything that Braveclaw could have, I needed it. Because Davix wouldn’t be able to capture him alone. No, he needed help. He wasn’t that strong and definitely not that smart.

I shook the thought away and shifted back into my human form, spotting Braveclaw’s borders less than a half mile away. After grabbing some shorts from the nearby tree where we kept them, I pulled them on and continued.

But … what about that other wolf? Davix couldn’t have captured both of them within such a short period of time. Maybe one of them. But someone from the Crimson Order? Absolutely fucking not. Those fuckers were stronger than us.

They had taken Ember, and we hadn’t even noticed it. We couldn’t even track them or trace them. There was no way that Davix could have both of them, unless they had wanted Davix to find them. And Davix’s dumbass had probably been ecstatic about capturing them.

When I finally made it to the pack, there were several wolves waiting at the border for me.

“Where’s leadership?” I asked.

One of them shook his head, the others staying silent.

“Where’s leadership?” I asked again.

“They … they’re hiding away. They don’t want to be next.”

I ran my tongue across my canines and bit back a growl. What weak fuckers.

“Fine. Where’s everyone else?”

“Reaper, there’s something you should see before that,” one of the wolves said, guiding me toward the war room.

He was walking at a hurried pace, less calm than I had seen him. Everyone here always had their emotions under control, but not today.

Something was very, very wrong.

I could smell the blood before I stepped into the room. It was thick, and it smelled like flesh rotting. The doors opened, and I was met with three of our strongest warriors. Decapitated. Their heads sat in the middle of the table, their bodies on the ground.

I stopped at the door, my eyes widening. I had just talked to some of them days ago when I came here. My heart raced, and I looked around at the rest of the group, who stared in just as much disbelief.

“What—how?” I asked.

None of this made sense. They had been strong, some of them almost as strong as me. They had gotten captured or killed so easily, without anyone knowing?
