“What did you say?”

“I said, hockey guys are always on time.”

“That’s a thing?”

“Yep,” she said, the ‘p’ popping loudly. “Look, all I know is you have Adam, the guy you’ve literally been in love with forever, the guy you’ve been moping about this year that you two weren’t talking, waiting for you upstairs. He looked a little green when you walked out.“

“I wasn’t moping,” I lied.

“You two are in love with each other, you literally told one another, but now what? You’re going on a date with a stranger?”

“I told you, Adam wants me to go and…” I shrugged. The elevator stopped, and we stepped out, making our way outside.

“Okay, without thinking, answer the next questions. Ready?”

“This never works.”

“This works every time. It helps us figure out what we want. Ready?” she reassured me.

“Fine.”

“Favorite color?”

“Pink.”

“Favorite ice cream flavor?”

“Cookies and cream.”

“Burritos or tacos?”

“Tacos.”

“Do you want to go on this date tonight?”

“No,” I answered honestly. And she smiled.

“Told you. It works. Every. Single. Time.” She grinned, and I laughed.

“You’re right,” I said and hugged her.

“I gotta go. You going to call Trevor?”

“Yeah, but I think I’m going to go on a walk before I go back to find Adam. Do you think he’ll be upset?”

“Honestly? I think Adam will be relieved you’re not going.”

“Fingers crossed,” I whispered. We hugged again, and I started to walk. I took my phone out of my purse and looked up Trevor’s contact information and pressed Call.

“Hello, pretty girl.”

“Hi,” I said quietly.

“Oh, no,” he groaned. “Hi?” he asked. “Please don’t tell me you’re calling to cancel?”

“Trevor—“

“Let me guess, Adam?” he asked calmly. Way too calmly. I almost wondered if he had been expecting it somehow.
