Will he kiss me? Do I need a breath mint?

“There’s never been anyone for me, Callie, but you.”.

“But… those girls are…”

“Always trying?” he filled in for me, and I nodded. “That’s out of my control. But let me be very clear about something. I’ve never touched anyone else, never thought about it or was even tempted. And I made sure they knew exactly where I stood.”

“Why?”

“No one was you. And this might make me sound like an asshole, but you gotta know, I couldn’t get myself to pretend when I knew only the real thing would do.”

He’d never pretend. Was he serious? Had he really never dated or had…

“Wait! Are you telling me that you’re, that we’re—“

asked nodded.

“How is that possible?” I whispered. “You’re all…”

“I think the same thing about you.” Shit. How were we actually having this conversation? Finally, after all this time! And in a place where anyone could walk in at any moment.

“I told Trevor I would go on a date with him.” His hands slowly slid down to my hip.

“You didn’t want him to pick you up.” Of course, Adam would notice when I was uncomfortable with someone.

“I don’t know. I’m sure he’s a nice guy…”

“But?”

“But… he knew too much.” Adam’s brows bunched.

“What do you mean, he knew too much?” His thumb stroked the small of my back.

“Nothing, I’m just… probably overthinking.”

“Do you want to go out with him?”

“Adam.” Before I could say no, he kept talking.

“You should.” He sighed. He might have stepped back, but he hadn’t let go of my hand.

“I should?” I asked, confused. What happened to the whole we-were-made-for-each-other stuff? Adam didn’t blink when he nodded. He simply swallowed, his Adam’s apple catching my eye before he changed the subject.

“Come on, let me help you clean so we can get you home on time.”

“I’m only due for my break,” I shared.

“I know. But you get in your walk before your break, and when you get back in a couple of hours, it’ll be time to clock out.”

“How do you know that?”

“Like I said, I never stopped coming around. You just weren’t paying attention.”

It was scary how easily we fell back into our old groove.
