Probably more than I needed to.

I pulled my laptop from my bag while she worked behind the counter. The espresso machine hissed to life, followed by the clink of a mug against the counter.

She came around the counter carrying two mugs. Mine was black. Hers was several shades lighter and topped with enough foam to prove she’d ignored everything she’d just said about keeping things simple.

She set mine in front of me.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t say I never did anything for you.”

“I wouldn’t dare.”

She sat across from me with her cinnamon roll and pulled her notebook closer.

“So.”

“So.”

“You apparently have ideas.”

“I do.”

“Enough ideas to invite yourself back into my bookstore.”

I paused with my coffee halfway to my mouth.

“I don’t remember inviting myself.”

“You suggested an in-person meeting.”

“And you agreed.”

“Because you offered breakfast.”

“Ah. So this is transactional.”

“Very.”

I smiled and opened my laptop.

“Good to know.”

Her expression shifted when I pulled up the Chapter & Charm website, amusement giving way to something closer to embarrassment.

“Oh, God.”

“What?”

“You really did look at it.”

“I told you I did.”

“I thought you meant you glanced at it.”

“I don’t glance.”

“Of course you don’t.”
