He gave me a small smile.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
“You good?”
“Yeah.”
His eyes stayed on me for another second, like he was making sure I meant it. I was starting to realize that was just Ellis. He asked, but he paid attention to the answer too.
“How’d the interview go?”
“Good.”
Naomi appeared beside us before I could say anything else.
“She didn’t embarrass herself.”
I looked over at her. “Thank you, Naomi.”
“I’m supportive.”
“You’re something.”
Ellis laughed, and I glanced back at him. Seeing him there, comfortable around Naomi and Mila, felt more natural than it probably should have. Somewhere along the way, him being part of my world stopped feeling unusual.
The photographer lowered her camera.
“Are these friends of yours?”
I opened my mouth.
Mila beat me to it.
“That’s my daddy.”
The woman smiled. “I figured.”
“And Miss Luna is his girlfriend.”
My eyes moved to Mila before I could stop them.
The word still caught me sometimes, even though it hadn’t felt wrong in a long time.
“Mila.”
“What?”
I laughed.
The photographer did too.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you.”
Ellis shook his head. “You too.”
Mila looked at the camera again.
