I pulled into my driveway and put the car in park.

“I’m home.”

“You inside?”

“I just pulled up.”

“So no.”

I smiled. “I’m getting out.”

I grabbed my bag and climbed from the car, carrying the phone with me as I made my way toward the house.

“You can go back to your edits now.”

“You dismissing me?”

“You said you were trying to finish.”

“I was.”

“And then I called.”

“And I answered.”

I unlocked my front door and stepped inside. “Goodnight, Ellis.”

He laughed softly. “Goodnight, Luna.”

I ended the call and set my phone on the table beside my bag.

The house was quiet, exactly the way I left it that morning. I kicked off my shoes and carried them toward my bedroom, already thinking about the shower I was going to take and whether I had enough energy to find something to eat afterward.

Tomorrow, I’d get up and go to Chapter & Charm. There would be orders to check and customers who needed something and at least one thing Naomi swore she told me about that I wouldn’t remember her mentioning.

And after that, there would be another day.

One thing at a time.

The thought settled as easily as it always had. Only tonight, I didn’t need it to pull me through anything.

I thought about the life waiting for me tomorrow, and for the first time in a long time, taking it one thing at a time didn’t feel like surviving.

It just felt like living.

Mila had been in and out of the kitchen three times in the last ten minutes.

The first time, she needed juice.

The second time, she couldn’t find her other sock.

Now she was standing beside the table with said sock balled up in one hand, watching me pack her lunch.

“Daddy?”

“What?”

“Is Miss Luna my new mommy?”
