“I need more.”

From behind me, Ellis sighed.

I smiled.

Mila grinned.

Ellis leaned down and kissed the top of her head. “Good night, Bug.”

“Night, Daddy.”

I started to stand, but Mila caught my hand.

“Good night.”

I looked down at her. “Good night.”

She held her arms out, and I leaned forward to hug her.

“Thanks for helping me with my homework.”

“You’re welcome.”

“And bringing pudding.”

I laughed. “That too.”

She let me go, and I followed Ellis into the hallway.

By the time we made it downstairs, I realized how easily I’d followed him through all of that.

Dinner. Homework. Dessert. Bedtime.

There had been no moment where I wondered whether I was supposed to be there or felt like I needed to step aside because this part belonged to him and Mila.

I was just there.

And somehow, that felt bigger than it should.

Ellis dropped onto the couch and reached for the remote.

“You want to watch something?”

“Sure.”

He looked at me.

“What?”

“That was easy.”

“What was?”

“You agreeing.”

“I agree with things.”

“Sometimes.”
