Ellis made a sound behind me.
I looked over my shoulder. “What?”
“She stirred something twice.”
“I helped.”
“Then disappeared upstairs.”
“I had to get my markers.”
She held up the handful clutched in one fist like evidence.
“For what?”
“My homework.”
Ellis looked at her. “The homework you were supposed to finish before dinner?”
“I’m gonna finish it.”
“When?”
She looked at me.
I immediately shook my head. “Don’t bring me into this.”
Mila smiled and reached for my hand instead.
“Come help me.”
“I just got here.”
“It’s only sentences.”
“That sounds like homework.”
“It is.”
I looked at Ellis.
He smiled. “Welcome.”
“See what I deal with?”
“I’m starting to.”
Mila tugged my hand toward the kitchen.
“Come on.”
“I’m coming.”
I glanced back at Ellis. He was still holding the banana pudding.
“You better put that in the refrigerator.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
