“Because I had the dessert.”
“You couldn’t make two trips?”
“Thank you, Luna.”
She laughed and took the bottle from Mila.
“Come here, Bug.”
Mila wrapped her arms around Luna, and Luna hugged her back easily.
Watching them still did something to me.
I hadn’t figured out exactly what.
Maybe I didn’t need to yet.
Luna pulled away and looked at the container in my hands.
“You brought dessert too?”
“I didn’t know what to bring.”
“So you brought everything?”
“Apparently.”
Her smile grew. “Were you nervous?”
“No.”
Mila looked up at her. “He kept touching the bottle.”
I looked at my child.
Luna pressed her lips together.
“Mila.”
“He did.”
“Go inside.”
She looked at Luna. “Is your mama in there?”
“She is.”
“Okay.”
And just like that, she was gone.
The front door closed behind her.
I stared after her.
“You just sent my child into a house full of people she doesn’t know.”
“She asked where my mama was.”
