She nodded. “Yep.”

I shook my head as she headed for the door ahead of me.

Six years old, and somehow she was the one keeping me on schedule.

The drive took exactly twelve minutes.

Mila spent most of it telling me about a girl in her class who apparently broke two crayons on Friday and blamed somebody named Kaylee. I was still not sure why this information required as much detail as she gave me, but by the time I turned onto Luna’s parents’ street, I knew Kaylee was nowhere near the crayons and Mila considered the whole thing deeply unfair.

“Is this it?” she asked.

I glanced at the house number Luna sent me.

“Yep.”

I pulled into the driveway and cut the engine.

For the first time since we left home, Mila got quiet.

I looked over at her.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You got quiet.”

She shrugged.

“You nervous?”

“No.”

The answer came too fast.

I smiled. “Okay.”

“I’m not.”

“I said okay.”

“Are you nervous?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

I looked at her.

“Let’s go.”

“Daddy.”

“Mila.”

She smiled.

I grabbed the dessert from the back seat and handed her the bottle of wine.
