I got us back across town with a few minutes to spare, although Luna checked the time often enough that I was starting to think she didn’t trust me.
At the last red light before Main Street, she looked at the clock on the dashboard again.
“Nine fifty-four.”
“I can see.”
“I’m just making sure.”
“That the clock works?”
“That you understand what the numbers mean.”
I laughed as the light changed. “You’ve been worried about this since we left the restaurant.”
“Because I have responsibilities.”
“So do I.”
“You don’t have Naomi waiting to judge you.”
“Neither do you.”
Luna turned toward me. “You really don’t know her.”
I pulled onto Main Street, and Chapter & Charm came into view half a block later.
“Nine fifty-seven,” I told her.
“We’re not there yet.”
“You can see the building.”
“That is not the same as being inside it.”
“You’re a hard woman to please.”
“I was perfectly pleased at breakfast.”
I glanced at her.
She seemed to realize what she said at the same time I did because she looked toward the window, but not before I caught the smile spreading across her face.
“Were you?”
“I said what I said.”
I smiled as I pulled into an open space near the bookstore.
The clock changed to 9:58.
I put the truck in park and gestured toward it. “Two minutes.”
Luna looked at the dashboard before turning to me. “You want a prize?”
“I’d settle for an apology.”
“For what?”
