“I’m just saying, ‘we’ll see’ isn’t really an answer.”

“Thank you, Miss Luna!”

“You see what you started?”

“I didn’t start anything. She already had a solid argument.”

He shook his head, but there was a smile tugging at his mouth.

“Well, I’m glad she wore you down.”

His attention settled back on me.

“She didn’t have to work that hard.”

Something in his tone made me pause.

Not long enough to figure out what.

“Daddy, look!”

Ellis glanced toward the children’s section.

“Coming, Bug.”

He started toward the children’s section before looking back at me. “It’s busy today.”

“It has been. I won’t complain.”

“I wouldn’t either.”

The bell rang again, and Naomi appeared from between the shelves before I could move.

“I’ve got this one.”

“Thanks.”

She passed me on her way toward the door, but not before her eyes moved from me to Ellis and back again. The grin that followed was subtle enough that he probably didn’t catch it.

Probably.

I gave her a look.

She kept walking like she didn’t see it.

Ellis watched her go before turning back to me. “Should I be concerned?”

“Oh, she’s harmless.”

“That didn’t answer my question.”

“It was the answer.”

His laugh followed me as I stepped from behind the counter to straighten the stack of bookmarks beside the register.

By the time I looked toward the children’s section again, Mila had made herself comfortable on the rug with three books spread around her. One was open across her lap, another sat beside her knee, and the third looked like it was waiting its turn.

Ellis followed my gaze.
