She shook her head and went back to the menu.

A server came over a few minutes later and took our drink orders—sweet tea for Luna, water for me—and as soon as she walked away, Luna looked across the table.

“No coffee?”

“I already had coffee.”

“That has never stopped anyone from having more coffee.”

“I know my limits.”

“You drink it black. Your limits can’t be trusted.”

I laughed. “Are we still doing this?”

“Probably forever.”

The word slipped into the space between us without either of us reaching for it.

Forever.

Luna didn’t seem to notice. Or if she did, she didn’t show it.

“You’ve looked at them four times.”

“How do you know?”

“I’ve been sitting across from you.”

“That doesn’t mean you need to watch me.”

I looked up.

She was smiling.

“I thought we’d already established that I notice things.”

“That’s different when you have a camera.”

“Not really.”

The server returned with our drinks and broke whatever had started sitting between us.

Luna reached for her tea. “So what are you getting?”

“Eggs. Bacon. Potatoes.”

She stared at me.

“What?”

“That’s it?”

“And toast.”
