He cried out and arched, his cock pulsing in Riley’s hand as his release spurted onto the ground. Riley swore and moved his hand to his own cock, finishing himself in a few more rough pulls, aiming for the same spot.

They stood breathing hard, Louis staring at their splatters mingling on leaves and sticks. Riley pushed back his hair and quickly hiked up his jeans, and Louis scrambled to put himself away too. His eye caught Riley’s, and they both stilled for a moment, staring at each other, then burst out laughing.

“Well, that was fun,” said Riley.

“Uh huh.” Louis scooped up his bag and hurried to follow him out of the clearing and back the way they’d come. His heart was racing and his ears were burning. It wasn’t just the thrill of doing it outside. Something about Riley teasing him… Fuck, yes, it was really hot. For some reason, Louis had been expecting Riley to be shy. Did he let him call him a nerd? Did he say he’d be thinking about sucking Riley’s cock? That was embarrassing.

They stopped at the top of the trail before they got back to the main lodge, and an awkward moment hung in the air. Riley scratched behind his neck. “Probably shouldn’t both walk out of the woods together at the same time.”

“Yeah, good call.”

“So…til next time, I guess?”

Louis scoffed. “Like I keep saying: there’s not gonna be a next time.”

“Uh huh.” Riley held his gaze. “Whatever you say.”

“I’m serious. This weekend was a ‘desperate times call for desperate measures’ situation. There were literally no other options. We’re not doing this when we get back to civilization.”

Riley’s eyebrow ticked. He stepped back. “Fine. Probably a good call. This whole weekend was risky enough already.”

“Exactly.”

“Dumb.”

“Yeah.” Louis cleared his throat. His face was still warm and he could still hear his heart in his ears. “Okay, well, I have a ton of work to do, so I guess I’d better get back.”

“Sounds good.” Riley stepped aside, sweeping an arm, and Louis carefully stepped around him. It felt like everything had suddenly gone weirdly cold and formal.

Which was good. They were colleagues and they had to go back to work and be professional. The last three days were fun, and Louis had gotten even with Riley for forgetting who he was, which was the most important thing, but that was that. It was fling.

That was all.

CHAPTER TEN

Riley

The anthem ended and the puck dropped. Riley felt like praying.

It was Monday night; Riley’s first game with Montreal. They were playing Tampa, in Tampa. The crowd was wild. Just two days ago, Tampa fans had watched their beloved wonder kid Elliot Rodriguez kissing Dustin Bennet. Now Rodriguez was playing against Nic Arsenault and Riley Webb? It was like the Four Gay Horsemen of the Apocalypse had come down and sprinkled everything with rainbow dust.

The building was shaking as Riley faced off for the drop. The guy he was facing was massive, and for a moment, Riley heard his mom’s voice saying My little boy! inside his head. He ignored it, snapping out his stick to snatch the puck away from center ice as it fell. He nearly groaned in despair as the puck bounced off his stick and the opposing center grabbed it.

First game as a Montreal Canadien, and he’d lost the face-off.

He sprinted down the center lane to catch up, with Volcheck and Montreal’s other winger, Marks, ahead of him. Volcheck stole the puck and sent it to Marks, and Riley yelled, “Trailer!” to let them know he was right behind. As he came up close he yelled, “Drop!”

Marks ignored him. Instead of dropping the puck so Riley could pick it up, he chipped it to Nic, who Riley hadn’t even seen at the wall. Nic caught it on his forehand and passed it on to Volcheck, and before Riley could get another word to anyone, the puck was in the net.

“So you don’t need me, then?” Riley called, as Nic reset in the defensive zone with Liam. “I’ll just park my ass on the bench, shall I?”

Nic didn’t hear him, and Liam just glared — but Volcheck, who was skating by behind Riley, yelled, “Sounds good.”

At the top of the second period, Rodriguez came up fast, appearing so suddenly in Riley’s peripherals that he startled him. In that moment’s hesitation, Rodriguez stripped him like a Tuesday night pole dancer, and took the puck up ice. Riley turned and gave chase, but he knew before he’d taken three strides that he wasn’t catching him.

On the bench afterward, Riley glared at the ice and took a deep breath. It was a couple of mistakes. Nothing to spiral about. So he got stripped by Rodriguez: big deal. The kid was the fastest guy in the league. It didn’t mean things were already going downhill. He could easily turn it around.

For a while, he actually did. He made a good pass to Arsenault, who put it in, and even Volcheck was forced to cooperate when Riley made a call in the offensive zone that would’ve been insane to ignore. He helped them score another point, and by halfway through second period, they were tied.
