“Did you drink my juice, Polunin?”

He grinned and it was the only answer I needed. “Serve me my eggs and I’ll fuck you over the table like you want.”

The salute I got in answer made me roll my eyes. I cupped myself through my shorts, giving my cock a good squeeze as I backed off and returned to the table. He messed around in the cupboards, grabbing some plates and dishing the eggs onto them, before dropping one plate in front of me.

“Here you are, Officer. Eggs at….” He glanced at the clock I had over the kitchen doorway. “Eleven thirty at night. Food fit for a king.”

I rolled my eyes and cleared my throat. Thanks was on the tip of my tongue, but I pushed away the urge to say it because this was Polunin, and gratitude between us would just be weird. I grabbed the fork he passed me and stabbed the egg, shoving the entire thing into my mouth. He laughed, but I ignored him and his delicate action of cutting his own egg in half.

“Is it good?” he asked, and then took a bite of his food. He chewed with more finesse than I’d ever had in my life.

“Not bad.” The eggs were fucking amazing, but I wasn’t going to tell him that.

Polunin sent me a knowing stare and went back to eating. Once we were both done, I grabbed our plates and set them in the sink. I could wash them up tomorrow. I didn’t get to move from the counter before warm hands slid around me, tracing the lines of my stomach muscles downward until they had a good grab on my half-hard cock.

Polunin pressed his chest against my back, but he was short enough that he could rest his forehead in the middle of my shoulders. He dropped a kiss there, and I involuntarily shivered. My spine was a weak spot. “So now we’ve had protein. How about you give me your own form of protein in the shape of your dick in my ass while you fuck me on the table?”

“Fine, but if you walk funny tomorrow, don’t blame me, Polunin.”

I fucked him on the table like I promised, and I even let him sleep on the couch, which wasn’t fucking cool, but I was too tired to care about kicking him out. If I felt bad about last time, I wouldn’t admit it. He left early the next morning without any hassle, which I was grateful for. Apparently, unlike some women, guys knew the score when it came to getting laid.

Showering and dressing for work, I got into the station with five minutes to spare before I started my shift. Molly, the cop shrink, tried to stop me on the way through the bullpen doors, but I waved her off like I’d been doing for the last month. I couldn’t avoid her forever, especially when Monahan found out I hadn’t done my monthly psych eval like we were required to, but I didn’t have the patience to deal with a hundred questions today.

The cap was already waiting for me, though. I hadn’t made it to my desk yet when she saw me through the open door of her office, and she crooked a finger at me to haul my ass in there. I sighed and headed past desks to cross the bullpen. When I got inside her less than private office—there were windows with open blinds along the front—I found another guy already sitting in one of the seats opposite Monahan’s desk. He was dressed in the navy blue uniform of the NGPD, but I’d never seen him around the station before. I nodded when he sent me a stiff smile over his shoulder and took the seat beside him.

Monahan sat on her chair and sent a cool smile at the newbie. “Slater, I’d like you to meet Jayce Paxton. He was on the job previously in Miami. He’s used to city work. He’ll be your new partner until we know what’s happening with Conrad.”

I held out my hand to him and he shook it. I wasn’t the kind of guy who complained about new partners because I knew the score. If I wanted to be out on patrol, I had to mostly follow the rules. Conrad was the one who had a thing against authority, not me.

“Nice to meet you. Just move here?”

Paxton nodded, his blue gaze watching me carefully. He had short blond hair cut in a military hairstyle, and wide shoulders, and he reminded me of a cop we had here a few years ago who got out of the Rangers before joining the force. It wasn’t uncommon to have former military men become officers once they were done with their service. I wondered if that was the case with my new partner.

“Fresh in town.” His voice rang with a startling British lilt. “Me and my husband moved here last week.”

“Husband?” The word echoed in my brain and sent a peculiar pang through my chest.

He frowned at me, mouth tight as though waiting for a fight. He shifted forward and a silver chain around his neck glinted under the lights. “Yes, husband. Is that a problem?”

I shrugged, my attention narrowing on his wedding finger. He didn’t have a ring there. “No problem, just surprised.”

“Not all gay men look the same,” he snapped, as though that was something he’d said numerous times in the past, and his face hardened.

“I know that,” I fired back. “I’m not homophobic. As long as you do your job, I don’t care who you keep at home, Paxton.”

Monahan held up her palms to us. Her short blond hair was smoothed down with something that didn’t let it move as she shook her head. “That’s enough, gentlemen. Slater, I want you to take Paxton for a tour around New Gothenburg, show him what areas we patrol, and who to be on the lookout for. Don’t piss off the Kings for no good reason. The last thing we need is for their lawyers to be on our ass, am I clear? I’ve had just about enough of them this week.”

I nodded. “Yes, ma’am.”

“The Kings?” Paxton glanced between us. “As in the Kings of Men? I’ve heard a lot about them since I got into town.”

“You’ll get to know them very well.” I pushed to my feet and grinned down at him. “And you’ll hate their faces. Their lawyers are a pain in the ass too. They know how to work a judge or jury.”

Paxton rose and stretched out his shoulders. He stood a couple of inches taller than my six-foot-two, and his posture shouted military. I made a mental note to ask him about his career history later. “Heard the feds were talking about moving in because of the clubs you have around here.”

“Wouldn’t surprise me if they were already here.” I shrugged. “We’re low on the totem pole. We’re the last to know everything.”

Monahan rolled her eyes and hooked a thumb toward the door. “Get to work. Slater, don’t think I don’t know that you’re avoiding your psych eval. Have it done soon, or I’ll suspend your ass too.”
