The screaming was gone.

She was also naked. Kane was spooning her, his arm thrown around her waist.

For a moment she just luxuriated in the feel of him next to her.

But she couldn’t rest.

Selina was still out there. She was angry that Kane had gotten away, and she wanted to bind him to her for good.

She’d almost managed it, in the spirit world. The only thing that had saved them was the shadowy creature.

She felt something warm and metallic under her side, and she sat up, gently disentangling herself from Kane. She felt around until she found what was irritating her.

It was the coin she’d given Kane so long ago. She couldn’t believe he still had it. Probably the one thing that could draw him into the spirit world after her. She couldn’t make out the markings in the dark, but she knew what they were.

She’d had it since she was a little girl. A yin/yang symbol, and a pair of wings.

Wings, like those of the creature in the cave. She wondered what it was. And if she really wanted to know.

She looked down at Kane, sleeping so peacefully. Willing to be her mate to save her; willing to give up being her mate to heal her.

He was so strong, and yet so vulnerable to Selina. She was his Achilles heel.

Rachelle had to get Selina out of Kane’s head for good. And she only knew one way to do that.

Selina had to be put down, like any other rogue shifter. But how to find her?

She slid carefully out of bed and padded across to her combat vest, hanging on the back of a chair. Her phone was still in the pocket.

She texted Carmichael.

Are you awake?

There was a pause. She almost went back to bed, and then she got a reply.

Baxter here. Answering Carmichael’s phone while he gets some shut-eye. Are you ok?

She replied: Yes. I’m fine. I need to talk to Carmichael. Selina Douglass needs to go down.

Agreed, Baxter texted. We have Noah Reilly incarcerated in the guest cabin two doors down. We believe he knows where she is, but we need you to get it out of him. His mind is a mess.

Carmichael had managed to get Noah brought here? That was brilliant. If there were clues to Selina’s hideout in his brain, she’d dig them out. With a fork, if she had to.

She jotted a quick note for Kane, and then got dressed and slipped out the door. She didn’t want to wake him. He’d refuse to let her go after Selina—or he’d want to go himself.

And Rachelle knew, as if the winged creature had told her, that Kane getting near Selina would be a disaster.

The whole compound was dark and silent. Rachelle found the guest cabin without trouble—it was the only one with a light in the window. She ran up the steps, rapped lightly on the door, and went inside.

Noah Reilly was in the living room, chained to a metal cot that someone had brought in. The coffee table was shoved to one side to make room for it. His eyes were closed, and he didn’t move when she came in.

Baxter was sitting at the dining table, doing a crossword puzzle. He put it down and got up when she arrived. He was a beefy man in his thirties, wearing a rumpled suit and a sidearm in a shoulder holster. There was a trank gun on the table. They really weren’t taking chances with Reilly.

“Good to see you safe and sound,” Baxter said. She nodded.

“The sooner we put Selina Douglass down, the safer the world will be,” she said. She nodded toward Noah. “Is he conscious?”

Baxter shook his head. “We had to put him out,” he said. “He was going nuts. But it’s one of the brainwave-suppressing drugs. We give him the antidote, and in five or ten minutes, he’s ready for you to do your magic on.”
