She smiled. “It’s funny,” she said. “I saw you sitting out there, night after night, and there was something about you. You drew my attention, even though I didn’t recognize you.”

He shook his head. “You recognized my wolf, but not my human form? I think I’m insulted.”

She laughed. “You look a lot different, Hunter, my friend. Twice as big, for one thing.”

“I guess,” he said. “A lot of water has gone under the bridge since we saw each other last.”

She smirked at him. “I’m insulted that you didn’t recognize me, though,” she said. “I was sitting in a spotlight, not huddled in a dark corner.”

He snorted and turned to face her. “Are you kidding?” he said. “You’ve changed way more than I have.” She could feel his gaze on her body, and she flushed, heat rising from her. “You used to be a scrawny little thing.”

She smiled up at him, and their eyes held. His gaze softened, and the heat returned. “I missed you, Raven,” he said softly. “And now I feel like I don’t know you at all.”

The look in his eyes took her breath away. “I missed you too,” she said. Her gaze rested on his lips, the memory of the taste and feel of him fresh in her mind, calling to her.

This was going to be so much harder than she’d thought.

“I guess we’ve both changed,” she said.

For a moment she thought he was going to kiss her again, but he stopped himself. Instead, he ruffled her hair the way he used to.

“Hey,” she said. “I’m not a little kid any more, and I take a lot of trouble with the coiffure. So don’t go messing it up.”

He just grinned and ruffled her hair again, and she slapped his hand away. God, his smile was breathtaking. He didn’t seem to use it very often, though. She wondered what the situation really was with his pack. And if he really was free of Selina.

She had to know. Carmichael was going to be furious, but there was no way she could just walk away and not see him again.

She had to make sure they didn’t find out who he really was. And if he confronted Selina, they would. She had to be close enough to protect him.

At least, that’s what she told herself.

“So, when do I get to meet this fabulous pack of yours?” she asked. “After all the stories, I feel like I know them.”

He hesitated, frowning, and for a sinking minute she thought he’d refuse.

Finally, though, he nodded. “What about Monday?” he said. “The lounge is closed. Maybe you could come out to Silverlake in the afternoon.” He looked up at her, his eyes hopeful. “And spend the evening? We could have dinner, or something.”

Silverlake. That must be his pack territory.

She was doing this for Kane, she told herself. To protect him. Not because he was her first love, who had turned into the hottest kisser she’d ever locked lips with.

“Sure,” she said. “I’d love to. What time are you picking me up?”

Chapter 8

The next day Kane was woken once again by Rafe banging on his cabin wall.

“Hey, Stone-friend, wake up. Jace and Jesse and Emma and Sophia just got back from Tennessee. Jace wants to have a meeting.”

Kane stumbled out of bed and went to the window, shoving it open and leaning on the windowsill. “Why now? And why the fuck can’t you ever knock on the door like a normal person?”

Rafe had a coffee mug in one hand and a donut in the other. “Why now, is because they took a redeye and they all want to go take a nap, which is code for having wild screaming fucks in their own beds and not in the Nashville Mansion of Overpriced Horrors. And no knocking is because that would be way less annoying for you, so not as much fun for me.”

He took a swig of coffee. “They brought donuts, though. So, not a total waste.”

Grumbling, Kane took a quick shower and pulled on some clothes. Fifteen minutes later they were gathered around Jace and Emma’s dining table, minus Terin and Sophia. And Israel, who had skipped the redeye and was driving back.

“Terin’s having morning pukes,” Rafe explained, at Kane’s questioning look. “Usually I hold her hair and give her crackers and water, but since I’m here, Sophia’s doing it.”
