Chapter 4
Mina followed Robbie to the door and watched while he walked out to his truck, gun clutched in her pocket. She couldn’t believe she felt like she needed protection against a man she’d been married to and shared a bed with.
She could tell by his body language he was angry, but there was something else. He was stressed to the point of losing it.
Robbie had never truly scared her before, but he did now.
What were he and Briscoe into? Was it a danger to Brock? Or even to her?
He opened the door of his truck and put his foot on the running board, but stopped before getting inside and turned back to look at Mina standing in the doorway.
He just gazed at her, his face unreadable. Then he got into the truck, slammed the door and drove away.
Mina sank back against the wall by the clinic door. This whole mess was all her fault.
After Justin Adams had been killed in Alaska, along with the wolf pack they’d been studying, she’d completely lost it for a while.
She barely remembered those few weeks, first in the hospital, and then in the psych center. She’d been living in a fog—nightmares at night, complete mental paralysis during the day. Nothing had seemed real. Nothing had mattered.
Robbie was the only thing she had to hang on to. No close friends or family to come and see her; nothing to bring her back to reality.
He’d been in the group of hunters who found her in the ruins of Justin’s cabin. They’d brought her out of the bush, and he’d told her he just couldn’t forget her.
He’d come to visit her in the psych center every day. He brought her flowers and little presents, and talked to her even when she barely responded.
Gradually, he’d brought her out of her fog, though the depression still hovered close to the surface. He said he didn’t mind. He’d take care of her. When she’d finally been released, he’d taken her away from Alaska and brought her back to Nashville, where he lived.
He’d done everything for her, and she’d clung to him, not bothering to ask why. She’d slept with him to keep the nightmares at bay, and because he said he loved her, and because he was the only thing standing between her and the darkness.
And then she’d found out she was pregnant.
He hadn’t seemed thrilled—more like worried. Which was understandable, considering what a mess she’d been. He was probably scared at the thought of such an emotional wreck becoming the mother of his child, but he’d talked her into marrying him.
It was Brock who had brought her back to life, though. He’d saved her, and she loved him with a fierce intensity she hadn’t known she was capable of.
But she didn’t love Robbie. As time went on, she realized that. And she didn’t think he’d ever loved her, either. Not really.
He’d loved how dependent she was, how docile. How he could be the powerful one, the savior, the caretaker. And the stronger Mina got, the more he hated it. They fought constantly, especially when she went back to work.
He hated her having her own money. Her own opinions. Her own choices. It got so bad she’d finally taken Brock and left him.
And then the wolf dreams started, reminding her of the promise she’d made to Justin. They’d sent her on a quest from state to state, until it led back here.
Until she’d gone crazy again.
She shook her head. She couldn’t think about that now. She wouldn’t.
“Brock?” she called out. “Brockie, where are you?”
He didn’t answer.
A tiny chill went through her, even though she knew he was probably just busy with something on his tablet.
But lately, she worried whenever he was out of her sight for more than a few minutes.
She hurried back into her office. No Brock.
Heart in her mouth, she raced to the doorway of the recovery room and froze.
