I shrugged. “We weren’t, now we are.”
“You did that on purpose!” she fired at me.
I laughed, I couldn’t help it. “Are you serious?”
“I told you I was interested in him, and you moved in. You couldn’t stand that Bram might want me—”
“He doesn’t and never did, and I can assure you, Leah, neither of us spared you a thought when we finally got together.” I shook my head. “He’s my mate. You never stood a chance.”
A low laugh rumbled from Bram, dark and sexy, and my belly quivered.
Her mouth pinched up. “Get in your car and get lost, and if you come back, I’ll set the dogs on you.”
“Thanks for your help,” I said, and we got back in and drove away.
Chase had been my best bet.
What the hell was I going to do now?
CHAPTER 24
Magnolia
I scrolled through the articles from the school newspaper. Talon had worked his computer-hacking magic and gotten us access to the high school server.
Most Likely To… by Willow Thornheart.
I clicked the file open and quickly scanned it, and bit back a laugh. “Well, this would’ve definitely pissed off the prom committee.”
Bram read it over my shoulder and grinned. “Yeah, that’d do it.”
Robert Hazark: Most likely to get turned on by his own reflection.
Jenna Barlow: Most likely to marry a complete and utter loser.
Chase Golden: Most likely to catch something and have his dick rot and fall off.
Clara Hope: Most likely to live off Daddy’s ill-gotten gains.
Calvin Adler: Most likely to marry his cousin.
Katana Adler: See above.
I had no idea how she’d managed to sneak that one into the school paper, but I knew without a doubt that’s what happened. No editor would have let that run. “Willow isn’t cruel, but she was obviously pissed off. I’d bet anything the peroxide prank wasn’t the first either.” I turned in my seat to face Bram and sighed. “What does any of this mean? We’re not getting anywhere with this. So they hated each other in high school, big freaking deal. Everyone hated me, but you don’t see me running around torturing and murdering a bunch of people. They can’t seriously believe Willow is doing this because of what happened back then?”
“We know she’s innocent, but the evidence is there. The murder at The Cauldron and all the DNA planted there. Her lip-sewing spell being replicated, at least something like it, and Calvin’s murder after their altercation at the clubhouse,” Bram said from my bed.
He was right, of course, but still. “None of this is making any sense.” I rubbed my temples, then covered my face with my hands, trying to keep the out-of-control feeling inside me at bay.
“Hey,” he said and came to me, kneeling down beside me. “It’s gonna be okay. We’ll figure this out.”
“What if we can’t?” I thought about my sisters and how scared they must’ve felt, how heavily the burden their own trials must have weighed on them. Rose’s was only six months ago, and we were still reeling from the aftermath of it, especially with the sacrifice Zinnia had made for her and the coven.
And before that, Death had come to Rose in her dreams repeatedly, tormenting her, blackmailing her. We’d almost lost her—
An idea struck. “What if…what if I could get inside Chase’s head while he’s still in a coma?”
“And what? Dig through his memories?”
