Then why did she want to cry all of a sudden? Why did she want to run?
The door opened—
She jerked in David’s hold when the man who had been coming in every night for the last two months, who watched her, who…intrigued her, walked back in.
His warm brown gaze sliced to her, then to David, then down to his hands now on her waist, holding her tight, not letting her go when she was so obviously trying to step back.
The warmth drained from his gaze and his jaw tightened.
Her mystery man walked toward them, his stare unwavering and hard, so full of malice when he looked at David. She shivered.
“All right, Meredith?” he asked.
He knew her name.
Of course, he knows your name; you’re wearing a name tag.
“Yes, thanks. I’m fine.”
David moved then…behind her. And her angelic, bad boy growled.
Growled?
He’s not your anything.
“Who is this guy?” David asked her, voice tight.
“Name’s Kryos,” her mystery man said.
What kind of name was that?
Kryos kept coming toward them, his muscular body brushing by her as he picked something up from the table he’d sat at. His wallet.
He slid it into his back pocket, then aimed his hard stare at David. “And you are?”
What was going on here? She blinked up at Kryos.
David sputtered. “Meredith’s fiancé.”
Meredith spun to him. “What? No, you’re not.”
David turned red.
Why had she done that? Denied it so quickly? It was only a matter of time before it was true, wasn’t it?
Kryos straightened, his gaze sweeping over her before locking on to hers. “You sure you’re okay?”
She nodded, throat suddenly too tight to speak.
His eyes softened again. “See you tomorrow, Meredith.”
Then he strode out for the second time that night.
Chapter 2
Brushing her hands down her apron, Meredith peeked through the round window in the kitchen and out to the diner. Kryos was still there, nursing the coffee Linda had given him an hour ago. He’d come back the next night, like he said he would, like he did every night.
Meredith wasn’t sure why, but she’d been hiding in the kitchen since he got there. Well, she’d been on cooking duty while Frank had his dinner break. Yes, she’d volunteered for the task, assuming Kryos would be gone by the time Frank got back.
