“I’m good at what I do, Meredith. Still, injuries happen. But not every week or even every month. Fighting demons is what I was born to do, but I’m immortal. Yes, I can be hurt, but I heal fast, and it would take a lot to kill me.”

Her gaze slid to his sensual mouth. “Okay.” She licked her own. “You never came to see me this morning.”

His nostrils flared. “I thought you might need some time—”

“Are we training or not?” Gunner yelled.

“I guess you better go,” she said.

“I don’t want to.”

She laughed, and it felt so incredibly good. “I’ll see you later?”

“Yes, you will most definitely see me later. We have some things to discuss, don’t we?”

She nodded, finding it hard to speak with him this close. And she wanted him to kiss her again, so bad it hurt.

His nostrils flared and he made a gritty sound, but instead of kissing her, he pushed away from the wall and took a step back. “Tonight,” he said gruffly, then swaggered back to his brothers.

And Meredith did her best not to melt into a puddle on the floor.

Chapter 9

Dragging a brush through her hair, Meredith looked at her reflection in the mirror. The face staring back was…changed. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes were bright. Her lips curled up at the edges.

This was true happiness, pure and real.

How could a person be on this earth for twenty-three years and have never experienced it? She’d had no comprehension of the feeling until now. The thought that there were others like her out there right now—demi-demons living half lives, yet to gain their powers, thinking their painful lonely, existences were all they could expect, that there was no hope—was so incredibly sad.

Because there was hope. Kryos and his brothers had the power to change their lives, and did every day.

Her smile deepened, something that happened a lot when she thought about her knight.

Because she loved him.

Was in love with him.

He said they were made for each other, literally, and she was sure that had something to do with how quickly she’d fallen for her beautiful male, but that wasn’t the only reason. Kryos was kind and caring and considerate. Protective and affectionate. He was all the things she’d dreamed for and never imagined she’d have.

He was just…everything.

Walking through her small room, she picked up the shopping bags she’d packed her meager possessions in, and placing her hairbrush on top, walked out the door, closing it behind her.

Kryos said he would come to her so they could talk, but she was done waiting. Her whole life she’d been waiting. Waiting for someone else to make her decisions. Waiting to feel normal. God, waiting to feel something, anything.

Well, what she wanted above anything else was one floor above her. He was there right now, she had no doubt, somehow she could feel him.

And now that she finally knew who she was and what she wanted, she wasn’t prepared to wait for one more moment.

She had only been here for a matter of weeks, but in that time she realized she was the kind of person who went after what she wanted—she was the girl who had initiated her and Kryos’s first kiss and not the one waiting to do what she was told.

Taking the stairs, she worked at steadying her breathing, at controlling her shaking.

She reached Kryos’s door and knocked.

There was a thump from inside, then the thud of him moving quickly toward the door. It opened, and his gaze slid over her from head to toe, concern creasing his brow. “Are you okay?”

“Yes.” Her gaze dipped, and she had to bite back a greedy sound. He was naked, apart from a damp towel around his hips. “I’m fine.”
