The training room.
God, her life was unrecognizable.
She’d only been at the warehouse with Kryos and his brothers, with the other demi who were currently staying here, for one week.
And she was…struggling.
Despite what Kryos said, imagining the people in her life, the ones she’d left behind, hurting, worrying, mourning her, was breaking her heart. Kryos had to be wrong. The idea that her parents would be relieved that she was missing or dead, out of their lives for good, was more than she could take.
Pushing into the training room, she forced a smile when Lazarus greeted her. The guy was nice enough, and thankfully it wasn’t Kryos here waiting for her because whenever she was around him, she wanted to get closer to him, to touch him, to have him touch her again…kiss her again.
That wasn’t a problem around Lazarus or any of the other men…males. She’d trained with them all, except Zenon. Zenon avoided everyone, including his brothers.
“How’re you feeling this morning, Meredith?” Laz asked.
She kept up with the false smile. They were trying to help her. These males had worked with her for the last week to get her to reveal her power, without success. Meredith hadn’t missed the confusion on their faces, the looks between them as if she was some mystery, an oddity. Even here she wasn’t fitting in. “I’m fine, thanks.”
Lazarus smiled kindly and headed for the door.
“You’re not training me today?”
“Nope, I just finished a session with someone else. You’ve got Kryos.”
The door opened before Lazarus could reach it, and Kryos, achingly beautiful with his golden hair and warm brown eyes, walked in. His gaze sliced to her instantly, and that constant hum inside her increased. So much so, she had to lock her knees so she didn’t move toward him.
Laz greeted his brother and walked out. Kryos shut the door behind him and turned back to her with a gentle, utterly gorgeous smile on his face. “How are you doing today?”
Crappy. “Great,” she said and lowered her gaze, unable to hold his.
The sound of his boots moving closer came next, and then he was cupping her jaw and tilting her head back. “You can’t lie, not to me. What’s going on? Talk to me, sweets?”
Sweets.
He called her that a lot. None of the other knights called her nicknames, affectionate or otherwise. Did he feel this thing, this connection between them as well? Or was it all in her head?
He kissed you back, and…other things. It can’t just be you.
Yes, but he was also an angel, which meant she’d more than likely corrupted him, tempted him, committed some terrible sin. She was probably going to Hell now as well. Wonderful.
Pulling away from him, she took a step back. “I’m fine. I just…I miss my parents.” She curled her fingers into tight fists. “And I don’t think I have a power. We’ve tried and tried and nothing’s happened. It’s just, it’s a lot.”
He nodded and moved to her again, so close she could smell his skin, his soap and leather and…god, she wanted to press her nose to his throat and breathe him in. She wanted to lick him all over.
Stop!
She had to stop thinking like that. He was an angel. Holy and pure and all that stuff, right? And she was just…her. A confused and terrified demi-demon, more than likely without a power.
“Close your eyes,” he said gently.
Meredith did as he said, because looking at him was like staring into the sun. When she was with him, she was blind to everything and everyone else. Having her eyes closed was good, it meant she could focus on something other than him. Maybe.
“There’s a hum, a low buzz deep inside you, isn’t there, Merri?”
“Yes.”
“That’s your power. It’s there. I can feel it, I can feel it radiating from you,” he said softly.
She licked her dry lips. “You can?”
