“What’s going on?” Gunner asked, swinging his sword.

Four demons were barely a challenge for Laz, T and Gun. They’d be okay without him.

Tobias glanced back. “You okay, brother?”

Kryos’s wings snapped into place, thankfully working again. “I will be.” Then he shot into the night sky.

It was time to collect his female and bring her home.

David’s hand rested on Meredith’s lower back as they left the restaurant. He was taking her somewhere special for dessert.

David was going to propose when they got there.

She was in no doubt. And she had no idea what she was going to say, how she was going to answer. David draped his arm over her shoulders.

Meredith wanted to pull away, everything inside her rebelling against his touch. That feeling of wrongness had never been more acute.

She tried to think, to get her thoughts together, but she was feeling odd, off-balance, and her heart was beating erratically.

It’s probably guilt.

She stumbled and David caught her around the waist before she could fall.

“Careful,” he said, pinning her more firmly to his side.

Kryos entered her mind, his gorgeous face and warm brown eyes—the way his lips had felt against hers—what they’d done in the garden shed. How badly she wanted to do it again. Only this time she wanted to make him feel good as well. She wanted to touch him too.

Stop it!

A wave of dizziness came over her, and she stumbled again.

David stopped and turned her toward him, bending at the knee so they were eye level. “You’re nervous, I get it. But you don’t need to be.” He smirked, his gaze dipping to her mouth, lower. “Christ, you’re gorgeous. As soon as we make this official, I’m going to make you mine in every single goddamn way.” He pressed his mouth against her ear. “You won’t make me wait for it, will you, Meredith? You’ll let me fuck you when I get an engagement ring on your finger, won’t you, darling?”

Her reply stuck in her throat, a shudder of revulsion moving through her.

He chuckled, assuming her reaction was something else. “No, there’s no need to wait, not when I’m insisting on a very short engagement.”

A buzzing began at the base of her neck, vibrating through her skull. Nausea washed through her and not just at the thought of having sex with David. Something else was going on, something was terribly wrong.

She shook her head. No, she couldn’t do this. She couldn’t marry him. “D-David…” Her knees almost gave out, and she gripped on to his arms.

“You’re overcome,” he said, eyes glittering. “You don’t need to be scared. I’ll take care of you, darling. I’ll teach you everything there is to know about the marriage bed and how to please your husband.” He led her down the street, past the diner, and around to the parking lot. He’d left his car there so they could enjoy the warm night with a walk to the restaurant.

Meredith trembled harder, on the verge of throwing up. Had she eaten something bad? “I-I don’t feel very well. I need to go home—”

David pressed her against the back wall of the diner and leaned in. “Oh no you don’t. You’re not getting away from me this time. These nerves will pass.” He dipped his head lower. “I think I know exactly how to help ease your worries.”

He was about to kiss her, it was written all over his face. His lids dropped and he puckered up. No. Meredith pressed against his chest before his mouth could make contact with hers. David’s eyes snapped open, and he was angry. Extremely angry.

The dizziness came back full force, and she clutched her head. “D-David, please, let me explain.”

“You need to start being a lot friendlier to me, Meredith. I’m seriously losing my patience with you—”

“What do we have here?” a rough voice came from behind them, echoing through the parking lot.

David spun around.

A man stood across from them. He stepped forward, out of his spot in the shadows, and grinned. He was skinny and had oddly sharp teeth. His beady black eyes moved over her in a way that had her trying to back up. But there was nowhere to go. Two other men moved forward as well, one on either side of her and David. They were a lot closer and were holding knives.
